Mac IIfx parts salvaging

Hi,

I bought pile of Mac IIfx parts (from a machine sadly already trashed due to a heavy battery-bomb) from a local auction.

The main piece of the auction for me was an Asante MacCon+ IIe Nubus Ethernet card (with an external twisted pair MAU). I just put this into my IIcx and it works great! I was especially happy to get this, as I had just been looking for one more Nubus ethernet card and there was very little stock on eBay and I've very rarely seen these come up locally.

There was also a beautiful set of MC68030RC40B and XC68882RC40A. My IIcx has a socketed CPU, but I presume the jump from 16 Mhz to 40 Mhz would be too much (and the 68882 is soldered on anyway) so I am not expecting to be able to use these in the IIcx. (I am sure I'll have other uses for these in the future!)

Among the parts was a IIfx ROM stick (Samsung KMM532128RP-01). Would this be of any use in my IIcx? Like give it 32-bit addressing without MODE32? After a quick google I figured it should be Ok to try, and I put it in. With the IIfx ROM I get a happy mac and 'Welcome to Macintosh' but followed by an error of '"The 'System' file on this startup disk may be damaged. The Installer can be used to repair this disk". The current install on the disk has MODE32, which I expected to be the issue here, but neither booting with shift down (to disable extensions) nor booting with esc pressed (which should disable MODE32 for the current session) helped the issue. It's getting late so I didn't test booting from 7.1 install disk or anything, but I am wondering if I could use this ROM stick here.

Then there was also a pile of 4MB SIMMs (4x 70ns and 4x 80ns), which should be handy elsewhere. The latter sticks have minor corrosion damage but it didn't look too bad and I expect them to clean up with some effort.

The 4MB SIMMs are very useful. 4 of them will give you 16MB and 8x will be 32MB RAM.
With 32MB in a IIfx, you can run System 8.1 reasonably well.
And since the IIfx RAM will only work in a IIfx (and one of the LaserWriter IIs, I've forgotten which)
If you have a set of 8x 4MB for the IIfx, you should sell them and buy more goodies for your IIcx.

@MindWalker I believe the IIfx ROM should enable 32-bit clean memory on a IIcx.

Socketed IIcx makes it eligible for the IIcx Daystar adapter should you get lucky enough to find an affordable 040 upgrade.

That is correct. My last IIcx became a slightly slower IIci without built-in video when I installed a IIfx ROM in it.

Are you selling the motherboard?

@Pushpull76: I don't have the motherboard, only the parts listed (the seller had already get rid of the machine after the battery leak, these were the parts he salvaged and then sold to me).

I didn't realize the presence of the W1 jumper (on-board or SIMM ROM select) last night I tried. However now even with the jumper set to SIMM ROM, I still can't boot the machine, still the same "The 'System' file on this startup disk may be damaged" error. If I boot without the hard drive, and a 7.1 install disk, I get a curious error: "This Macintosh is set for 32-bit addressing. You may switch to 24-bit addressing and use this disk or restart and use a newer startup disk. (System 6.0.7 does not work with 32-bit addressing)".

Ok it seems that the ROM is working (as it says the machine is running in 32bit mode), but why my old install errors out and do I really need to install again?

@MindWalker Yeah, you may have to reinstall. You'll probably want to use the retail version of System 7 instead of the version that shipped with your IIcx. It will have the options to install for "Any Macintosh." Then it should work. I'm also a big fan of 7.1 Pro. It's my main OS.

7 Pro (7.1.1) is good, as is the original 7.5 version, which is 7 Pro with some bug fixes, plus a bit of Performa stuff added (Launcher control panel, Apple Guide, etc - stuff that can be removed, turning 7.5 into 7 Pro, basically). My IIci is running 7.5. Centris 650, I'm running 7.6.1 on. SE dual boots into either 6.0.8 or 7.5.1.
