so this iici turns on but has no sound and had a battery leak. i cleaned off some of it and heres is the pictures. is it fixable at this point? some of the green that goes over the traces came off when cleaning. i hope that wont desrroy it. Thanks

Possibly, depends on how bad the corrosion is.  When you say it turns on, does it boot? If so, you're in a good spot.  If not, then you might be able to fix.  The corrosion does not look to be too bad in the pictures, if traces are corroded, they might be fixable. It certainly needs to be recapped.

Hah, I take my previous comment back. Corrosion around the chip UH1 and UK2 upon looking at the bigger pictures looks really bad.  And there are a lot of exposed/bare traces.

do you think its still fixable? i just turned it on it  does spin the hard drive, the light turns on and the screen output is just white. one of the ram cards were so corroded i had to throw it out.  its crazy this thing turns on. can bare traces be fixed? well after 5 minutes its dead. wow. what a disaster lol.

Did you replace the capacitors on the logic board? And what about the CMOS battery? That needs to get replaced too...

(almost) anything is fixable, but that looks like a lot of damage. Lots of corrosion on IC legs and eaten traces. Myself, if I had a board with that much damage, I would give up and donate it to science. But my threshold for pain is low. :)

Ooh, yeah, +1 for soaking the boards in vinegar to neutralize the battery gunk, and cleaning the boards with water/IPA to see what damage the corrosion's done...

well it's not even turning on anymore so i guess sending the computer off to get recapped may just get it to turn back on and nothing else... getting another motherboard for thisis going to be expensive. any suggestions?

f☆☆k you battery!!! who leaves a battery in a computer since 1991?

My other hobby is playing with Lionel trains. A lot of their diesel engines used a D cell battery to power the horn relay, and a lot of those batteries were left in the trains when Jr. outgrew them. As a result, a lot of Lionel diesels have "battery compartment damage". So, this hobby didn't really invent anything by having batteries destroy things.

I don't think it will like having 1 RAM simm missing, remove the whole bank of 4 :)

Anything is fixable, but it might take time and a steady hand. How much SMD soldering have you done?

The IIx I've been working on only needed 7  trace fixes so far and it is mostly working now. But yours looks worse, unless someone had cleaned mine.

Try to save it - IIcis are probably one of my favorite macs. I was saying to my dad it is a shame they never made a IIi (as in a not compact IIci) - a 25mhz bigmac with integrated video and a floppy port :)

i have some other ram from a iisi that wouldn't work. i dont have any experience with soldering, i have a steady hand but dont have a idea about circuit boards. and work a lot so I think it would go to a pro. since it at least turns on should i cover the copper traces with tape or soak the board in vinegar?

Using vinegar is good to get rid of any of the leaking from those nasty capacitors. Just make sure you also wash the vinegar off, as any residual vinegar can cause more corrosion.  I wouldn't worry about covering the traces yet, find out how close to potentially even being repairable it is first.  Traces can be covered with a thin epoxy that you use UV light to cure for protection.
