Mac II batteries

I've cracked open my 2 Mac II's in prep for refurbishment.

On one of the machines the two PRAM batteries are soldered in with axial leads. Seems like the following item on that auction site would be appropriate replacements. However, the original Varta batteries are 3.0v. These replacements are 3.6v. Would there be any issues using these as replacements? Would I be better off putting in battery carriers for easier replacement in the future?

I also see a lot of these Saft brand batteries on Amazon and eBay. I'm guessing these would be OK for other Macs that need batteries, or does the collective have a preferred brand or source for replacement batteries?

BTW, the other Mac II has a little board installed with battery holders already installed.

I find it interesting that in both machines, one battery seems to be holding a good charge, while the other is totally discharged. I'm assuming this is normal :)

They should work fine. The IIx used both types, as did the SE.

IIRC, both my IIfx and my G4 have the Saft batteries in them.

yup one is used to jump the power supply on.

the other is for the RTC, pram….

3.6v is fine or if you want to go to radio shack and get a holder plus 2 AAA or AA's.

it might be same price or even less to do that.

yeah those SAFT made in france batteries seem to be going around.

they are probably fine.

the axial batteries i always clip the leads right at the battery and then just solder those leads to the new battery.

you can also get some holders for those 3.6v lithium batteries.

or if you wait till you have me re-cap something else,

i can sell you some of those batteries for cheaper then what they are all offering.

So - batteries arrived on Wednesday...

I cracked open the Mac II with the battery holders and replaced the two batteries, even though the one was showing 3.6v. Hit the power, and nothing :(

I jumped the last pin on the logic board connector with another 3.6v battery, and the machine booted right up but with no sound (other than the 80M Quantum drive screeching like a banshee)

I guess it's time to pull the LB and give it a wash, and think about re-capping.

Didn't have time to try the second Mac II with the soldered in batteries. That will come this weekend.

PS - what's the 'native' resolution out of the Toby video card. I couldn't get the video to sync with my flat-panel even using a number of different resolutions on my DB-15-VGA adapter. I had to dig out my Apple High-Resolution Mono monitor to be able to get video.

Re: Mac II powers on but does not chimePostby bear » 23 Jul 2013, 14:20

Somehow a trace involved in the connection between R3 and C6 comes open, which prevents the power switch from turning on the machine. I'm not sure about "common", but it has happened on both my IIs and my IIx. I'm not sure how it happens, or exactly where on the board it's going bad, but it's definitely going bad, and it's definitely the same part of the circuit each time.

Thanks for sharing that. Both my II and IIx had the same problem. C6<->R3 also goes to R18 on the II, so putting a wire between R3 and R18 is convenient with both on the bottom side of the board. On the IIx, it's R19 instead of R18.

Nice thread! This didn't pop up in my forum search; I guess I'll have to work on my search expression skills...

Thanks uniserver!
