Mac 68k MT-32 emulation piping through MUNT

I've started experimenting with using MUNT to receive MIDI via USB from my LC 475 and I have some early success, but running in to a couple of road blocks now.

I've been able to:

  • Connect a MacMan to my LC 475's modem port (recommended as the default if you can't choose)
  • Connect the MacMan to my PC using Roland's UM-ONE mk2 adapter
  • Tell MUNT to listen to the UM-ONE.
  • Installed Open Music System 2.3.8 on my LC under OS 7.5.5
  • Installed Arnold's Midi Player
  • Disabled Apple Talk
  • Play a midi file on my LC and hear it through MUNT on my PC.... so I know the hardware works.

What's not working are games, specifically Sierra, they either say they can't find the Midi device, or crash on load when configured to use midi.   I'm wondering if they are hard coded to look for Apple's Midi Manager?

But I cannot get Apple's Midi Manager to see MUNT's emulated Roland MT-32.

I'm wondering if I need one of Apple's Midi Interfaces to get Apple Midi Manager to work properly, but I thought others were using MacMan interfaces?

Can someone with a real MT-32 tell me what they had to do to get their's working?  I think @Dimitris1980, that you've had some success?

My plan is to add to my blog once/if I get this working, it would be a much cheaper option that a real MT-32 if you have a modern laptop you can connect to.

Got it working.  The problem was I copied the Apple Midi Driver and Midi Manager in to the Extensions folder (following the instructions).  On a whim I decided to move them to the parent OS folder.... and suddenly everything works.   I now have the full Roland MT-32 experience for my sierra games on my LC.

Total cost: MACMAN $20 + shipping off eBay and Roland cables, black Friday sale $30.

I like what you have done. Very nice job. I haven't used my Roland MT32 via programs like Munt or Dosbox. I have used it with success on my Performa 6116, Power Macintosh G3 Minitower and now with the big help of this forum on my Macintosh LC475. These days i am looking for an audio mixer in order to use one pair of speakers with my Macintosh LC, Roland MT32 and the external Apple SCSI cd rom drive. But also i am close to acquire a midi interface card in order to connect it on my Dos/Windows 95 computer. I like a lot my Macintosh computers, lots of games have better graphics and sound than the other formats but unfortunately only few games of Sierra Online support Roland. So i think it is better to connect it on my Dos PC. The quality of Roland is superb.
