Looking For Sonnet Presto PPC Disk Contents

I remember chasing this when I got my Sonnet Presto; it’s been a couple years now but at the time I couldn’t locate it.

The PowerPro control panel has always worked perfectly, but I would also like to try the 8.5 enabler. I’ve attempted the ‘gusd’ modification in Resedit, which worked perfectly on a PowerBook 500 with 603e card, but I’ve had hangups trying to do the same with Q950s on 601s.

The author of this site posted a link in the comments here. Hopefully it works!

It works! Direct link here: http://www.otenko.com/macintosh/Presto-PPC-8.5.sit

I'm not sure where I went wrong last time I tried the 'gusd' mod, because using the same System Folder again now works. Could be I was a goof and tried to boot without switching to 601 mode...

Anyhow, I copied an existing 8.6 System Folder from my TAM and added "Presto PPC 8.5 Enabler" to the root directory, and the Quadra/601 happily booted to it. The "Presto PPC ID" extension changes the gestalt to 112 (7100/66) so the 8.5+ installers will run, same as Wish I Were or MachID Wannabe, and it's not needed to boot from the installed System.

Thanks for bringing it up; I had given up searching before but I'm glad to have it now!

Wow! You were busy! I’m amazed you were able to find this I couldn’t find squat googling. Wonder if anyone would care if the files were uploaded to the garden or repository for easier finding in the future as well? That’s quite the find in a very large haystack!

I remember spending so much time chasing this the first time around I didn't really expect to find it, but I'm very glad it resurfaced! I must've been looking only a couple months before that comment was posted because I definitely remember reading that page.

That's great news and thanks for the posting the file.
How well does the Q950 run on Mac OS 8.6?

Chugging was the first word that came to mind, but still very usable. This one's merely a 66MHz/1M model clocked at 77MHz, but even given the benefit of booting from a CF AztecMonster on a SiliconExpress IV it feels pretty slow. 8.1 feels snappy by contrast.

I'm away from part of my stash at the moment, but now that I know this works I'd like to see how my other two compare. The 80MHz one with 64-bit memory should do much better I suspect, probably even better than the 100MHz/1M clocked at 115.5MHz can. The 950's non-interleaved 32-bit memory really drags compared to an 8100/100 or 840AV.

Well in any case thanks for doing the legwork on this, super helpful. I do think I'm going to put them on the repo or garden just for safety if nobody else beats me to it.
