Lisa 2/10 Error code 82 :(

I happen to have in my possession a Lisa 2/10. :lisa2:  In the past, it has booted successfully to LOS. I booted it up recently, after having not booted it in a while... now it gives me error code 82. After doing some digging, the best I could find for this is that error code 82 means "Drive won't answer" (from the Sun Remarketing Apple Lisa/Macintosh XL Do-it-Yourself Guide). So, the widget drive isn't working.

Not that this is necessarily relevant, but this Lisa is also missing it's 400K drive and its keyboard.

In any case, I'm not really sure how to proceed. Does anyone know how I might resolve this issue? Is there some way to repair the drive?

The widget has a brake system on its head that might get stuck. The bearings can also get stuck. What can you hear precisely from the widget? something is moving?

for your floppy, you can use this one (the external 400k from your macplus will fit perfectly in your lisa (I have the same in mine), you just need some small riser if you do not have them in your drive cage).

Oh no, that's just for my emu... :D

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So at least I have this now; I've been busy lately so I haven't had time to try this out yet with the Lisa.

I can't really hear anything except the fan; or at least if the drive is making unusual noises they aren't any louder than the fan.

Is there anyone who has a hard drive image which work on the FloppyEmu?

If so... could you share? This makes it possible to start in a situation with a faulty disk , like in this post.

I don’t think the floppyEmu can emulate a Lisa hard drive  (profile or widget). For that you need something like an XProfile.  When setting up my Lisa before I got my widget working, I used the floppyEmu to install BLU on my XProfile, made a floppy and then used BLU to test and fix my hard drive.

First step to get the widget running is to adjust the brake.  You will need a feeler gadge from the auto parts store.  then blow out the motor spindle with a can of air or compressor.  Dust can cause the drive not to spin.  Plug the drive in and manually turn the spindle to get it started while power is applied.  It should spin if everything else is ok.  Let  it spin for an hour or so.  It will get better usually.   Mine went from a scream to normal after about 45 minutes.  In my case then I needed a low level format with BLU and then a full Lisa Office install.

I then put my widget away and use the XProfile for normal use since it’s solid state with an industrial CF card.

Cheers,

Corey

Thanks Corey for these advices. Would be a great thing if we could use the FloppyEmu as disk. Maybe a version 2.0?

i would love a XProfile but they are rather expensive.

I don’t think that would be an option for the FloppyEmu.   It only emulates an Hd20 because the HD20 was hacked by Apple into the floppy port for a Mac 512/512e.    The Lisa can’t even use two floppy drives at once.   The widget connects to a dedicated parallel interface which makes it a major hardware change required for the FloppyEmu to act as an HD and at that point it would be a completely new product.

If you are handy with a soldering iron you could built one of these

I can second this. One of my Widgets needs a nudge to get spinning after it's been sitting for a while. I do it with the eraser end of a pencil when the drive is in the machine. If I started it every couple of days, it probably wouldn't be a problem, but if it sits more than a week or so, it needs the nudge again.

I should probably get used to the fact that an X/Profile or ideFile is in my future if I want to keep running this machine, but I like the Widget and the little squeaky noises it makes on disk access :)

The pencil tip is great! Used it today on my widget which was build in today. With the help of a pencil push it can start.
