LC 475 installation woes

For some reason my overclocked 475 with a full 040 is being rejected by all the installation media I've tried. 

I have an OS 7.6 CD and that gets rejected with "This program does not run on this computer model". 

I tried the system 7.5 installation floppy image that came with the Floppy Emu and I get "The system software 7.5 installer does not recognize this Macintosh.  Please use the original disks that came with your computer."

I finally got 7.1 installed from one of the Apple software recovery CD's.  I could swear that the 475 supports all the way up to 8.1?  Anyone know why it is rejecting all my attempts to install various versions?

When 475s and 605s are overclocked (or underclocked), it changes their gestalt ID to one that the installer doesn't recognise (and was never used by Apple in a shipping product). 

If you have a spare 475 board, you can install using it and swap the overclocked one back in - or, I think, booting from another drive with 7.1 installed and wish I were installed to change the ID back to an original 475s, and running the 7.5 installer from there may work. If you're really stuck, undo the overclock, install, and then re-do the overclock. 7.5 is happy to *boot* after it's installed, the problem is just the installer.

You could also probably install a system for all macintoshes on another machine and just swap the HD in if you have a non-475 hanging around.

It's been a long while since I've had to deal with that oddity on my Q605s, my most recent install has been running since 2015 or so - memory is a bit faded there.

Could you just use WishIWere to trick the installer?

Hold option or command buttons or both (can't remember which) when you open the installer will bypass what mac you're installing on - did that recently with an LC475.

I tried command, option, and command option, when running the Install MacOS program off the 7.6 CD and it didn't help.  I just keep getting the message "This Program does not run on this computer model."

I'm gonna try WishiWere next.

Okay, WishiWere solved one problem but now I have another.  I get the installer going, and it is about to install, and then it tells me I don't have enough space to install.  I think the problem is that I have 7.1 installed on a 4GB partition.  That is all I could previously get to install.  But I don't believe 7.1 can see more than 2GB so it is confused about the size of my 4GB and 3GB partitions (I tried them both). 

I can boot from the CD but then the WishiWere extension isn't running and I can't install. 

I seem to be stuck. 

I guess I'll have to go back to the idea of installing the software on a normal not overclocked 475.

Do you have a <2GB drive you could attach to external SCSI? All you'd need to to is dump the CD contents to it and add the wishiwere extension.

Even better, you can use Disk Copy to make an image (500MB should be plenty) and install to the image from within your booted OS with wishiwere running. Then you could transfer the contents to the real volume (I've done this plenty of times.)

Oh jeez.  The stock 475 for some reason isn't honoring the shift-option-command-delete-4 command to boot off the CD-ROM drive at SCSI ID 4.  The other one did it just fine. 

Anyways, I think I figured it out.  I booted off the 8.1 disk tools image that comes with the Floppy Emu and then ran the 7.6 installer from that, while the SCSI2SD device is on a stock 475.  Installing now

Oh, I think I get it.  I would have to boot to the floppy emu or something I guess to be able to overwrite the system folder on what would otherwise be the boot volume.

Next up, gonna try and install the LC PDS Ethernet card and see if I can get it talking to my a2server to install more stuff.

Gladly! This trick is great for quickly building a multiboot volume too. It'll make sure the installer doesn't 'upgrade' stuff from older systems you may have installed on the same volume.

Alrighty then.  Got the Farallon card installed and the machine is on the network.  That was much easier than I imagined. 

I'm a little curious though, in the chooser, my a2server doesn't show up.  On my Mac Mini running 9.2.2 I had the same problem and had to browse to it by IP address.  But under 7.6 the chooser doesn't give that option.  How do I show an Appleshare server by IP address?

You need to update the Appleshare software to a later version to be able to do AFP over IP with 7.6.

Oh brother, this is what kills me about this hobby.  I put the cover on and now the 475 doesn't recognize the SCSI2SD at all.  I get a quick blink on the activity light on the SCSI2SD and then some time later the Mac informs me it doesn't have a startup volume.

Do you have an external SCSI zip drive or MO that you could boot from?

BTW, do you have a fan on the full 68040? It mightn't be a bad idea.
