iTunes 2 weird on my TAM

I have itunes 2 running on my tam. I have about 20 gigs on an external firewire drive running to the firewire card i installed. Almost every time I start a song about 5 seconds into it I have wierd blips and pops like a scratched cd for a few seconds and then it clears up for the rest of the song.

Here are my specs:

400 G3 L2 Uprgade

64 mb ram

OS 9.1

I messed with the buffering settings to no avail. I even went in and disabled all the extensions I don't use in OS9 to try to free up some ram. Not much to play with settings wise in itunes 2 (which I just downloaded from Olderversions)

Im going to go ahead and download itunes 1.1 and other mp3 players tonight to see if that helps.

Everything else works. Any ideas on how to fix this??

Thanks

This behavior can be caused by many things. To narrow down the possibilities, here are some questions:

1) Does the problem always occur at the same point in a song? If you re-play the song right away, does it still exhibit this problem at the same point?

2) If you copy the song onto your local HD and play it from there, does the problem go away?

3) Do you have any network activity enabled (including filesharing) that may be competing with iTunes for resources? If so, try disabling them and see if the problem goes away. [i know you said that you disabled extensions, but I don't know which ones, specifically.]

4) If you change the disk cache settings in your control panel, does that change the problem? There may be unwanted interactions between the accelerator card's cache and the OS's cache.

5) And along similar lines...What about virtual memory? If you've enabled it, try disabling it and see if the problem disappears.
