Yeah, that's not fair, we never get anyone from Apple coming to see us! Though do you do a computing subject? (I don't, so maybe that's why no-one from Apple ever comes to see us

Well, the last time they came was in 2004. And they were definate, honest-to-God, annoying-as-all-Hell, card-carrying RMBs. So don't feel too bad. The reason why they thought my iMac is rubbish is because its a tray loader, G3/333. Oh well, to me its still a great machine. :beige:

Sounds good to me too
But then I love the G3 series Macs, I think they're probably my favourites (the G4 towers are nice too, but inaccessible at the moment as they still have value). The only problem with the iMac is the built-in crummy (sorry ) graphics though, a beige or blue tower would probably be my choice for that reason, although the design of the G3 iMac and iBook (original) is awesome in my opinion.

That's the way it goes. When you are buying new they tell you it's the greatest, but a few years on they tell you it's crap because they want you to buy again. It works that way for everything, not just computers. Planned obsolescence, they call it.In 2003/2004 we had guys from Apple visit our uni to show off the stuff they'd intro'd at WWDC 2003 and WWDC 2004, respectively. I'm sure some of us remember the Tiger intro where the Apple dude basically told me that my iMac was rubbish. >

Yep, St Andrews. They visited in February (I think) to give a talk about recruitment and jobs at Apple. They also visited Edinburgh University the next day. It was the first time Apple has done talks at Universities outside of the US, and apparantly it was very successful.

Yeah...the graphics on it aren't all that much chop, but i'm not a gamer, and the Rage Pro is fine for Photoshop, so i don't really care.Sounds good to me too

So something like the 8 cores and Blu-Ray of the PS3 just don't do it for you as far as a gaming machine goes then? :b&w:Doesn't a decent graphics card help even just with everyday OS X though, as it's designed to take advantage of a GPU if there's a decent one fitted? Eg on my G3 all the effects like Expose, Genie etc are very fast and smooth, and I doubt that it would be as pleasant if I was using the machine's built-in video (which with 6 MB Vram I think is pretty similar to what the iMacs had). It even plays Quake III and Unreal Tournament nicely, on OS X!

If not, then sorry, but it doesn't do anything for me. As for OS X...it does like having a good GPU, although on the 6MB Rage Pro (which is the same chip as whats in your G3) its not as bad as what you'd expect....its very usable.

Hmm, I had assumed it wouldn't be very good on that chip (I thought I saw somewhere that a big difference between smooth and choppier is noticeable if you have a dual-display setup with the tower and move between the screen attached to the graphics card and the one on the built-in video) - what are the visual effects like for you then?

With a PS3 i have to first fork out the AU$999 or whatever for a PS3, then figure out how to put Linux on one, then compile Basilisk II, etc etc. With the LC475 all i do is plug it in and turn it on They're a bit choppy, yes, but they're nowhere near as bad as what you'd expect. I'm sure if i had only, say, 64MB of RAM or something it would be very bad, but with 256 its really quite usable. The thing about OS X is that it LOVES RAM, so if you have a crap GPU or CPU, but a decent amount of RAM, the amount of RAM may make up for other areas where your Mac is less-well-endowed.

I was just scanning the main index and was thinking, "That Newton category looks lonely. I wonder if iPhone discussions should go there, too. Smartphones aren't that far removed from PDAs, after all."
