iPod Touch EVT (probably)

Will arrive sometime this year (hopefully!): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125642660469
Looks like a very early EVT (but not as old as Jajan547's...) of the 3rd gen iPod touch (serial number indicating a May production date).

Will it be the one that's effectively a second gen with better radio (model number indicates this), the better one, or an EVT mixture of the two generations? I'll lift the screen up when it arrives and post pics.

Guy seemingly didn't know what he had, how did that slip through eBay unnoticed? I'll bet it's an EVT of the MC 2nd gen though, not a 3rd gen but we'll see. I'd also try jailbreaking it when it arrives and cracking the apps to IPA files, then uploading to archive.org. There's a bunch of stuff installed on it from the photos, and I'll bet a lot of those apps haven't been archived yet.

I made him an offer - much fairer than 99c, but less than "RARE APPLE PROTOTYPE STEVE JOBS" listings.

Are old IPA files in demand then? Can you strip the identifying info from them? I used to cache all of mine on an old NAS so have loads of them stashed away.

If they aren’t “cracked” then they will ask for an Apple ID login on launch if you sideload one, but you can’t see the email in the pop up. Cracking them removes this and to my knowledge doesn’t leave anything identifying behind. Not sure exactly what you’d use on iOS 3, but there’s a guide on the legacyjailbreak subreddit.

Hey if you want me to ship my prototype for you to tinker with I don't mind letting you borrow it and see what you can share from it too. I don't know much about it or how it works.

Neat find. I had a 1st gen iPod touch from new, it was a neat device at the time. Funny seeing those big bezels and curved back again, so different to the new stuff.

Yes. It may seem extremely wasteful of screen space by modern standards, but I rather prefer the old look.

Everything nowadays has become much too big and too thin.

Good point! I hadn't thought about it much until now, but it does seem like after so many years of getting impossibly thin, most Apple devices have actually begun to thicken up again.

I still don't care much for the design language, however. Too much screen, not enough bezel, and no physical home button (the home "button" in the iPhone 7/7+, 8/8+ and 2nd/3rd gen SE is more like a pressure sensitive sensor with haptic feedback emulating the click of a mechanical button, but at least it still maintains the old form and is dedicated to the purpose, as opposed to the iPhone X and all its derivatives, which replace it with a fully software-based button on the screen).

And of course, there's "The Notch" :p

Anyway, enough complaining. A 2nd gen iPod Touch EVT is a very neat find!

Last off-topic thing: here’s a side comparison between an iPhone 4 and the 14 Pro Max. Sorry about the focus, had to take the photo on the old 7 Plus with issues focusing up close.

That's very interesting! I guess Apple is finally running out of new design ideas, so they're recycling and adapting some old ones!

I wonder what Steve Jobs would think of all the new designs Apple has come up with lately? Up to at least 2016 or so, he would've still had at least some influence on Apple's overall design language, but some of the latest designs just don't seem like anything he would've approved of.
