Installing DaynaPORT drivers on Plus under System6?

Playing with a PiSCSI on my Mac Plus trying to get networking set up and...

I tried copying the DaynaPORT installer into a directory but they will only install from their disk image or a physical floppy. I'd write it to a real floppy but its 1.44M and the Plus obviously can't read that. I can't for the life of me remember how to mount an image under system 6. I have Mt. Image and MountImage 1.2b2 which is what I remember using under system 6 but they both bomb on the Plus for some reason. I don't remember how to use them I guess.

That's very strange, MountImage shouldn't crash, but perhaps there's something up with the disk image you're using?

It didn't get that far. When I try to open MountImage I get the message:
The file "MountImage 1.2b2" could not be opened/printed (the application is busy or missing).

I figured my copy might be corrupt so I downloaded another copy but it did the same thing. Tried it under a couple of different system 6 installs but got the same result.

I managed to get past this hurdle by squeezing the files (minus documentation) on a 800K floppy with the correct volume label. That seemed to be enough to make the installer happy. Now I'm facing the same problem with the Network Software Installer Version 1.4.5 image. I wish I could remember how I did this in the past.

Edit: Discovered that DiskDup Pro has a mount image feature that works in system 6. I've never used that before.

How have you moved the files to the computer? It sounds like they have lost their file type and creator tags (the system thinks they are documents, not applications. If they've lost these, they've likely also lost their resources fork. It feels like you might be decompressing them on something that doesn't properly work with old mac files, like a Windows pc, or putting them on a DOS formatted disk?

My original copy of MountImage came from a friend that was once an Apple service technician back in the day. To my knowledge it never touched a PC filesystem. I use Basilisk II running on Linux for most of my file manipulation needs. Linux's ext4 file system also preserves my resource forks if I ever put anything directly on it - like my netatalk share.

Erm... not automatically. Only if you convert it to something like AppleDouble format, like netatalk does.

We might have found the issue :) if you're copying raw apple files onto ext4, you're stripping the resource fork.

Oh woops. I didn't know that! I'm sure I've caused myself issues making false assumptions since I could decompress things on my netatalk share from the Mac side and things worked.

It's the way of things. I accidentally nuked some of my old files a few years by copying a backup to an ext4 drive from a HFS+ drive without thinking.

Wish everything was smart enough to warn us, or cope with resource forks.

Am I living in a fever dream, or doesn't the DaynaPort need something like Open Transport or MacTCP to work, and don't those things not work on System 6? Someone kindly correct me if I'm wrong here, please.

MacTCP works in 6 I think. Some TCP stuff did. I have a folder with Sys 6 TCP stuff on my SE.

Yes MacTCP works. I managed to ping the google DNS servers from a Mac Plus running system 6.0.8.
Then I broke everything again. *sigh*

I had this all working on a Mac SE back in 2015 with a real DaynaPORT.

MountImage is a CDEV, not an application. Put it in the System Folder and then restart, and then it will be in the Control Panel DA.

THANK YOU! I knew it had to be something like that. It is amazing how much stuff I have forgotten when I go back and trying to use system 6 again.
