Install Me First CD for Quadra 660AV

I have a Quadra 660AV that I recently purchased. It has the original CD-ROM since it has a date of December 1993, and it is an AppleCD 300 Plus (the one that uses a tray and not a caddy). I have downloaded and burned the Quadra 660AV "Install Me First" CD, and it will not boot. However, it will read it okay, so there is nothing wrong with the CD-ROM drive.

When I create floppy disks from the CD to use them instead, it will read them and freeze at the start screen. I am guessing that this 660AV is a later revision, and I probably need the newer "Install Me First" CD. It would also explain why it cannot boot since the AppleCD 300 Plus is not compatible with the older version.

I successfully got 7.5 on this computer, so there is nothing wrong with the computer itself. However, this originally came with 7.1. Does anyone know where I can find a newer revision of the "Install Me First" CD that came with the Quadra 660AV. I have done lots of searching, and the best I can find is an old eBay listing that had version 1.2 (Part number 691-0207).

Thanks

What you describe is not possible on the software level. It is more likely there is something wrong with the way you are creating your disks or there is a hardware issue that 7.5 hasn’t yet revealed.

I would start with trying different RAM and recapping the board if you haven’t already.

What enabler is on your system folder cd or floppy? If it is not ver 1.2 try download here and replace it on medium

To my knowledge, there is no "later" 660AV. System Enabler 088 should allow any Quadra to start without issue with 7.1.

From 1993 there was System Enabler 088 1.1

Apple did update the enablers. They were available on service cds. The latest was 1.2

Oh, I have no doubt they updated them. I have never heard of a certain revision Quadra only working with, say, 088 version 1.2 only or something.

Well, as we speak, I'm making a disc image for you of my Quadra 660AV CD which has 1.1 on it.

Interesting as well with the tray load. I never knew a 660 could have a tray load instead of caddy drive.

Anyhows, here is the image of my CD:

Mine has the tray loading CD and the manual inject floppy drive. I assume it is the original CD Drive since it has date codes on the mother board of late 1993. The hard drive was replaced with a 850MB Quantum Trailblazer, from 1995. It is fun Mac use since it can record video from s-video or composite.

Thank you for the dump but I can't convert the file to iso, hdiutil keeps saying attach of disk image failed: 112

Could you redump the disc on a proper burning utility like ImgBurn? https://www.imgburn.com/
As bin/cue would be best. Thanks.

I assume that since the 840av transitioned from caddy loader to tray loader over its sales life the 660av did as well.

It is an "ISO", thats what .cdr images are. It is made with Apple's own Disk Utility, there is no reason it shouldn't work. Why not try just using DIsk Utility itself? Or...are you trying to do this on a PC or something?

I’ve seen newer versions of macOS / Disk Utility refuse to burn Classic Mac CDs with a similar error (don’t recall the code at the moment). I think it’s trying to be too smart, and refusing to burn a disc with a file system it doesn’t recognize (since HFS support was removed some time back). I’m pretty sure there’s a way to do it from the Terminal by directly calling hdiutil (again, don’t have the details at hand).

If you have access to a PC with ImgBurn it should burn a .cdr (or other ISO) without any issue.

Do anyone know if all Install Me First discs were multi language? The disc from above photo seems like it.
