Indigo iMac G3/500 (probably dead)

Found an iMac at the side of the road on the way to work this morning. It's and Indigo and, based on the serial number, is a G3/500 (early 2001). The bad news is, it appears to be dead.

I initial tried powering it on and would only get a small burst of static from the speakers when I pushed the power button. I tried replacing the battery with a known good one; now, when I press the button I hear something like "Flup, Flup, Flup, Flup" from deep within.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks...

Sounds ike bad caps on the power supply board. Pretty common from what I have been seeing. You can get new boards on "the auction site" I think. Or just dive into it, and recap yourself.

Although starting up with the pram zap key combo might work, at least worth a try.

I was afraid of that.

I'm finding myself hard-pressed to put any time/money into fixing it. To be honest, I picked it up on a whim, but have enough other hardware that is equal to or better than it performance-wise.

I suspect that, unless a miracle occurs or someone wants to pick it up in Central NJ (NJ Shore), then it'll probably go straight to the county recycler.

well, lots of those parts can be re-purposed,

those speakers in there are pretty decent.

DVD drive or CD-RW drive is worth something,

RAM

Airport Card? Airport Card Riser?

those are worth something.

You can make a super killer looking LED back-lit fish tank with it.

Main board is probably good. - sell?

You could always gut it, glue a 15" LCD screen where the old one was, and install a kick but hackintosh on the inside :)

I've not found much of a use for the G3 iMacs other than for streaming music over the network. However, those little speakers sound GREAT! I've got one in the garage and one in the basement, and one my daughter likes to use to crank her tunes too.

No AirPort or carrier, RAM appears to be minimal (one stick).

I had thought about pulling the drives, maybe throw the DVD up on the TradingPost or LEMSwap. Hadn't thought about the speakers or mobo, but if they're not too hard to pull...

Watch this space, I guesss. :)
