ibooks and the net

my ibooks are quite frankly driving me to the brink of what is left of my sanity

i have been busy for a week to try and get them online ( usinga direct cable modem line no routers or anything in between just a straight cable)

and not a bloody thing happens

via my imac G5 it works just perfectly but when i plug the cable in either ibook the whoel line goes dead

on the imac al i need to do is plug it in and let the connection go via dchp which configures it self correctly on the ibooks however i get a differnt ip adress that does not connect even when i put in my ip adress and subnetmask manually and i get confirmation of os x i am conencted to the internet not a damn thing happpens safari and os x update still time out

and quite frankly i am very close to introducing the ibooks to a very short very sharp flying lesson with an abrubt lethal ending

both books are running new installs of tiger 4.6

Why not just network them up?

My internet connection is tied to a MAC-address (for some reason). I have to keep a router in between (and tie the connection to that) to go online.

The symptoms I get when connecting anything but the router sends pretty much like you describe. Have you tried using a router?

no i havent tried a router funds at the moment dont permit a router especially not if i am sure if it wil work or not

on any random windows machine i pull out the connection works just fine on my imac G5 it works just fine but both ibooks refuse to go online

What configuring have you done? The very least that you will need is to make sure that ethernet (green blob) rather than internal modem (red blob) is selected in System Preferences/Network/Network Status on the iBooks. DHCP you seem to have taken care of, but what IP address is reported? You may very well be getting one of the 'I am talking to myself' addresses (169.254.x.x) if modem is selected when you need ethernet.

If ethernet is selected correctly, but still not active, you are faced with the possibility that your iBooks have borked ethernet controllers. Two at once seems unlikely, but this may depend on your sources of the Macs.

PS What kind of Cat 5e cable are you using? If your iBooks don't 'do' auto-MDIX (iBook and iBook FireWire), you will need a crossover rather than a patch cable for direct connection to your modem. An intervening 100Base-T switch ('router') would do this automatically for you.

i have selected ethernet but i havent turned the rest off i might need to do that just in case

and i am getting the damn i am talking to my self ip adresses when the cable is reported to be plugged in

and i stil dont get a connection on either when i manually configure my connection and they are reported to be active

the 500 mhz might have a dead ethernet controller ( the plug is supiciously brown ) but the cable is reported by both to be plugged in

yes

i mirrored my setup of the imac G5 ( which works i am using it now and works the moment i plug it in )

im going to turn off al other options on the ibooks sans ethernet to see if that has an effect ( i did turn the modem bluetooth and airport off on my imac )

You haven't mentioned the effect of using a crossover cable instead of a patch cable (above), or of using an ethernet switch between the modem and an iBook. Are you able to borrow a switch? They are platform-agnostic, so one from the PeeCee world will work.

Try this even if your iBooks are dual USB or later, and therefore nominally capable of auto-MDIX.

i dont think il be able to borrow a switch but i might look in to a router or a switch today if funds permit
