This is the same story I've posted over at System7 forums so if you have read it there you can skip it here :b&w: .

Hi all,

This is Thomas from Belgium. Let me tell you my MacStory...

My dad bought a Quadra 840av in 1994 to use in his office as a medical doctor. Naturally i was drawn to this fabulous machine and kept messing about when he was not home. A year later he bought a Powerbook Duo (which was stolen from his office a few months later.) When my dad grew weary of my infernal experimenting and game playing, he bought a secondhand Mac Classic 4/40 and a LASERPRINTER for me. Initially I was disappointed by the downgrade. But still the machine gave me hours of pleasure (chipmunk basic anyone?). On the game side it was rather meager: At the time there were very few stores who carried mac gear and certainly no games that ran on my poor Classic. Luckely I discovered the early internet in a CyberCafé so I could download and install some abandonware and shareware. A year later I bought a secondhand Amiga 500 which I could get kazzillions of games for. Around the year 1999 I got a free IIci from someone. And I enjoyed setting up Appletalk networks and doing all sorts of stupid shit. Later on I lost my interest in these old Macs and told my mum she could take them to the skip (The classic had also died, but now I think it was probably just bad capacitors.)

My dad and I have this system that I always inherit his old computers (currently my most modern system is a CUBE G4,when will my dad grow tired of his G5?).

Through this system I am the proud owner of:

A TAM spartacus (Yes, my dad bought it full price!)

A Powerbook G3 233Mhz (My dad got this one for free from Apple because the TAM logicboard had been replaced three times!

This is the Mac I got most joy out. I lived through my student years (2002-2006), went to Syberia with my girlfriend who wrote her thesis on it (2007). Helped me in my previous job as a store manager (2008-2010). Currently it is left behind their and they still use my excell for making work plans.

And now I have the Cube.

Since September I have a new job and follow evening school java coding. And so my interest peaked once again for old school macs. A week ago I bought the following for the princely sum of 50 euro:

Takes deep breath

Performa 460 (LCIII+) (yay always wanted an LC) (very cool system, ony problem is that it has bad capacitors sound just like a kettle)Does this machine has a problem with 1GB drives I tried to install several but without any succes. Is it possible to and an fpu, there seems to be an open socket?

IIci (once again) with chache card and apple videocard 670, sadly it has only 4MB ram.

Powermac 6100/66 (can't boot this one with the weird monitor connector looks like a pretty cool machine).

Powermac 8200/120 (this one boots but nothing on screen, all the ram and video ram has been taken out, can this be the reason?)

Powermac 7200/90 (same as above)

Powermac 6400/200 Boots nicely but has had it harddrives taken out.

Powermac 6500/275 (same as my TAM, boots nicely, and surfs the web with icab currently has 8.5 installed)

I'm probably only going to keep the LC460,IIci,and 6100/ 6500.

Believe me, I'm pushing my luck here with my girlfriend in our small apartment.

It really feels like coming home! O how I prefer system 7 over OSX! I still now all the tricks and stuff.

Well enough jibberjabber for now!

Hey, another Amiga user! I was able to get an Amiga 2000HD from the ICT department at my high school, and I rebuilt it over the summer. The only thing its missing is software, but I'm sure I will be able to find some disks for it at my school (the 500s I believe use 5 1/4" disks). The Amiga series was truly ahead of its time.

Anyway, welcome to the 68k forums! :beige:  :)

Your IT department still had an A2000? Great did they still use it or do they have a vault with all their old stuff?

According to the IT guy who gave it to me, it had been mothballed for 15 years, or so. A particular school still had it, and were in the process of throwing it out. So fortunately a little inquiring about old equipment/computers saved this awesome piece of machinery.

All I had to do was dust it out, and replace the PRAM battery to get her starting again. I believe it has a 10MB hard drive (I forgot what brand; I'll get back to you on that), but for some reason the HD was cleared, or the ROM needs to be booted- I haven't yet determined which, as the 2000 asks for this:

Thoughts?

What you see is the Kickstart screen, now you can insert a workbench (desktop) floppy or a game floppy so that it will boot. You need Workbench 1.3 I don't have those otherwise I could make you a copy. Trouble is you can only copy an amiga disk on an amiga. you should go to amibay.com and put up a wanted ad. It is also possible that the harddrive is just dead, if it is an ST-506 drive it is very likely that it is kaput. If it is SCSI then it is possible that it is on the wrong id or maybe badly connected :disapprove:

I had a feeling. Actually, the version I require is 1.1. That was just an image I found on Google.

I doubt there were any other PC-systems of that era compatible with the Amiga architecture. It was very unique.

you should go to amibay.com and put up a wanted ad.
I'll check that out. Thanks for the link.

I'll open it up & check out what type of HD I have. I have an ST-225N inside my Apple SC20. Seagate was very reliable back in those days. I doubt the one in the Amiga is dead, as I heard it spinning up when I turned it on last week. Still a potential possibility, nevertheless.

My 2000 has a Quantum ProDrive LPS, which I believe holds 20megs of storage.

When I opened it up, I noticed that the jumper cable was disconnected, but even after reconnecting it, it still would not get past the Workbench boot icon.

Anyway, I am in the process of getting some boot disks from a fellow on eBay, so hopefully that turns out well.

Well that is good news that is a SCSI drive so it will be easy to replace if broken. Maybe you should check if the termination is right. I believe Workbench 1 didn't have a HD installer included. There are ways but I can't remember how. I would say good luck!

PS a picture of my current setup

The psion netbook has wifi so I can download files and send them over the serial cable to the Performa 460. The look less yellowed in real life.

I think that was why most people got the Amiga. They were fairly popular so you always knew someone with one and a bunch of games. I still have my A500 and A1200. The latter I bought off a.. uhm.. purveyor of software of dubious origin who was moving to the PC. So I also got a couple of those plastic floppy disk cases full of disks. I was probably more productive then than ever as I didn't have the internet to distract me. Just a bunch of favourite games and a few well-used programs like Protracker. I didn't even have a hard disk, but I did get a second (external) floppy.

On the Amiga-esque side of things, MorphOS now supports the Mac Mini and PM G4's (though anything from the Gigabit Ethernet onwards needs a sound card as the onboard isn't supported yet). I prefer Icaros (which is free) but it's only for Intel.

Greetings and welcome! Nice collection you've got there
Thanks!

I love that Psion.
Thanks, It is a Psion Series 7 with an upgraded personality module (wich doubles the speed and ram and turns it into a Psion Netbook) and another additional 32mb(which is really). The OS is super nice sadly it is no longer used (it does live on in Nokia's Symbian).

Let me tell you a bit about the macs you see there:

Performa 460 36mb ram 1 gig HD, 768kb video ram and a PDS fpu. Currently has bad capacitors in the sound area ( now it makes a loud hissing noise). running OS 7.6.1

Macintosh SE 1mb 20mb HD (going to be updated to 4 mb and a 170 mb hd). No problems even the battery still works. Was last used in 1995 before I obtained it two weeks ago. currently running 6.0.8.

Below the table:

LCII 4mb 160mb hd is going to be the donor floppy drive for my IIci. running 7.1

IIci 20mb ram 500mb hd , cachecard, tokenring card (bleh), Apple video card 670. Needs a new Pram battery, floppy drive and the sound is very silent (so probably also bad capacitors ) running7.6.1

Powermac 6100 152 mb ram, 1gig hd (hidden CDrom ) Has problems, doesn't like to boot up without the pram battery. I want to upgrade it to a G3 with sys 7.6.1

Imagewriter II, works but needs inkt and makes horrible noises when printing.

Does your IW's sheet feeder work? They're notoriously quirky and if your printer isn't sounding/working too well, I'd recommend trying it without the sheet feeder.
