G4 Keyboard problem

After starting up my G4 (AGP 400MHz) it doesn't recognise the keyboard which is a Macally ikeyslim.

The keyboard has two USB sockets , one has the mouse in it the other has a USB stick, if I remove any of these Mac detects this and gives its warning message about removing USB devices.

Top get the keyboard to work I have to unplug it from the Mac USB socket and then reconnect it.

Any body got any ideas as to why the Mac initially doesn't recognise that it has the keyboard attached?

I'm wondering if the USB ports are being overloaded by having both mouse and flash drive hooked up at the same time. That's why the keyboard is unresponsive until you remove a device. Second, there may me a slight latency programmed in the keyboard's ROM. This could be throwing the timing off and preventing the computer from recognizing the keyboard. But that seems a bit far-fetched to be true.

To fix this problem, I would start by placing a POWERED USB Hub in between the keyboard and computer. See if the problem still occurs. If not, then the USB ports were underpowered. If they occur again, then the keyboard should be the problem. I would then replace the keyboard with a different one.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried plugging the mouse and keyboard into the two USB sockets on the G4, but this didn't make any difference. I shall try a powered hub and see if this works.
