I got a new LC and it has the old old black 40mb conner drive. Of course it wouldn't work so i tried the trick putting tape over the black rubber bumbers. Now it spins at the beginning and hangs. Its not recognized on the performa 6116cd . Is there a better fix? Thanks

This is pretty much a symptom of an aged hard disk drive, and not much you can really do.  You may be able to get it to start working, but likely only for a short period of time.

You should look for a replacement drive if  you want to continue using your computer.  There are lots of various options from SCSI2SD to Jaz and Zip drives, to another old aged drive, to putting a SCSI3 server drive in with an adapter.

The thing is i could get my powerbook 170 hard drive working its the same drive just smaller.
Just like in life, drives die, and it is something you can't predict.  You can sometimes guess, but you never know exactly when.
