Fixing a dead Power Mac G5

A few months ago, I found a dual processor Power Mac G5 and took it home. Unfortunately, the liquid cooling unit leaked and destroyed the motherboard and processors. It's also missing a couple of fans and a hard drive. I want to fix it, but I don't want to spend a whole bunch of money on it either.

I was thinking about buying a less expensive single core processor and motherboard:

Any suggestions?

You'll likely also want a power supply - the power supply in the G5 is right in the bottom of the case, and if the coolant has leaked onto the motherboard, you can bet its also destroyed the power supply. If you have to replace that many parts, its not really worth it IMHO...you'd be much better off stripping it, that motherboard alone is US$200, which is way more than you want to pay to repair a dead computer thats no longer supported by a current version of the Mac OS.

Try calling Apple about it. They have been repairing PowerMac G5s with leaking cooling units out of warranty, even if you are not the original owner. You may have to talk to several levels of customer service at Apple, but keep stressing that its a serious safety issue, as the leaked coolant makes the all-metal case electrically live, which could be a fire and/or electrocution hazard. xlr8yourmac has a section on this.
