Finally, Some Liberations...

It's been a while since I've done this (and my wife is probably going to kill me for doing so :p ), but I finally liberated some Apple equipment from one of the schools in our district. The tech at that particular school is a fellow coworker and offered it up for grabs before dumping it out. Originally, it was for a LaserWriter II but I ended up with three other items of interest to me:

1. Apple LaserWriter II (as mentioned)

2. Apple Macintosh LC II

3. Apple eMate

The LaserWriter needs a bit of cleaning on the outside. I have yet to test its printing capabilities. As for the LC II, it's missing the cover for the PDS slot but I have an Ethernet card that should fit into that slot. Finally, the eMate looks practically brand new, save for some permanent marker writing that was used to identify it in the bunch (probably for a cart). Hopefully, I can use something like the Magic Eraser to remove that. If not, ah well....at least I finally have my eMate. :)

Aside from doing a GNU/Linux how-to for a Linux podcast on installing Linux/ppc into Old World Macs, I now have some other mini-projects to keep me busy during the Christmas vacation. :D

Awesome find on the eMate. Try rubbing alcohol to remove the marker. Follow it up with magic eraser if necessary. Both should get it removed.

Don't try the magic eraser! It doesn't do to well with marker, I have a scuffed up part of my desk because of them. Try using an spray can of something (I have tried hairspray and axe body spray) it most of the time fully removes the marker.

You have to be careful, as some cans of spray have chemicals in them that can melt the plastic (as does nail polish remover, etc). Basically it's the alcohol in the body spray that removes the marker, so Mike Richardson's suggestion of rubbing alcohol is a safer bet as it's pure and shouldn't damage the plastic... YMMV of course!

I'll try on a small section and see what happens. If it doesn't adversely affect the plastic, I'll do the affected area.

Thank again, guys.
