Evie's Conquests

Somehow my recent-ish Conquests thread vanished so I have to start over again...I've gotten a couple Mac things recently but one I only just got today and the other hasn't actually arrived so I'll start with this one, a PowerBook 180 with a 6MB RAM upgrade I got off eBay to replace the 180 I sold to a friend about three years ago. It works but the screen seems like it's got the "tunneling" problem, which sucks. Not sure if I can actually fix that or just mitigate it...

Pretty sure it's moisture related. I think there was a thread years ago about how you could bake them and "fix" them.

I'm going to let it sit in my nice dry house a while and see if that helps before doing anything drastic.

I picked this up over the weekend, definitely one of my best computer pickups ever...a complete in box (minus the software, unfortunately) Power Mac G4 Cube that I somehow got for just $50. I can't wait to get this thing up and running!

Very nice - I paid more than twice that, about a decade ago for mine (it was missing the speakers, so I had to source those separately)

That's an incredible deal that you got - the speakers alone are worth more than that!

You should be able to find the software if you keep your eyes open and ask around, I'm sure someone will have a copy laying about if you feel the need to complete the package.

(be sure to check inside and make sure the battery is not too old)

Agreed! That is quite a conquest for $50, especially with all you received. Careful though, G4 Cubes are similar to CCs and SE/30s in terms of them being rabbit holes to fall down when it comes to hot-rodding.

As far as software goes, Macintosh Garden to the rescue:

I don't actually know what to do with the weird format they put their files in, .cdr is not a file type I've ever heard of before.

Anyway, I got another conquest in the meantime from the land of the rising sun, a fully loaded (and very anime) PowerBook 2400c. Was not cheap, but the CD-ROM drive alone is probably worth like half what I paid...

.cdr would of course hint to Corel Draw :)

But no, it is a ready-to-burn image created by the Disk Utility from OSX. ISO would have been a better choice..

What's the CD-ROM - Pioneer with SCSI PCMCIA card? I was given a very generic looking PCMCIA CD-ROM for another laptop, you've got me thinking I must try this in non-optical Mac laptops now ....

It's branded "IO Data" but I think it's a Pioneer drive, yeah.

Any idea how I would convert those to something I can actually use?

It's not a Mac but I picked up this Apple IIc bundle yesterday for $125, there's more that came with it (including an ImageWriter II and various disks and manuals) but I haven't processed them yet. The monitor is not the usual Apple IIc monitor but instead the 12" monochrome composite monitor sold alongside the IIGS. The IIc needs some work but I'm glad it shows some signs of life.
