Dual G5 2.0Ghz Repair

Ok so I went ahead and started another project that I have no business starting until I finish some others but here I am anyways. I picked this G5 up for super cheap $20 locally with an issue of it shutting down after being powered on for a couple minutes. It gets to the desktop and you can use it briefly before it just shuts off.

I opened it up and it’s one of the most disgusting machines I’ve ever worked on filth and dust and just grossness everywhere. I only recall one machine that was worse and it had an actual mouse nest in it. Anyhow this one is nasty everything you touch leaves your hands black. I figured I’d start with a good cleaning and see if perhaps it is just not able to cool correctly with all the nastiness. I’ve got a good bit of it apart but I’m not sure how to remove the processors I keep finding guides online that are only for the liquid cooled machines. So I’m looking for a little guidance on how best to proceed here. You should probably label the processors top and bottom before you take them out.

Also with that much dust you probably need to remove the PS and clean it.

Ah ok that's a good tip I didn't know they were different. Also how do I remove them? Any idea what size that allen is? I don't have a wrench long enough to get to the screws from the top. I think I'm going to have to order them.

To be honest I don't recall the size. While I have 4 G5 towers I never had to remove the CPU, I did work on somebody else's G5 but that was a long time ago.

I think each CPU is independently thermally calibrated so switching them might cause issues and need recalibration.

The machine might benefit from thermal recalibration anyway, with fresh heat sink compound et al. The ASD utility is out there. Takes about an hour to run through the whole diagnostic/ calibration sequence.
