Dual-Boot and switch between OS 8.6 and OS X - Tutorial

I had just installed both Mac OS 8.6 and OS X 10.2 on my iBook Clamshell, and then I discovered something. While OS X could switch the startup disk to the OS 8.6 system folder, OS 8.6 could not switch the startup disk back to OS X. I was about to write up a thread asking if there was some 3rd party tool that could switch system folders, but then I had a thought. What if I just copied the Startup Disk control panel from a copy of OS 9.2.2 and replaced the OS 8 version. Would it work? I had to find out.


It did!

I’m not sure how far back this works, but there you go!

For all I know, this could be common knowledge, but I thought I'd put it here in case it helps someone out in the future.

That's really cool! Although I myself am not too sure about the appeal of 8.6 compared to 9.2 other than RAM usage on older machines....

Thanks! I didn’t have any systems running 8.x, so I thought I’d see how it ran on the Clamshell. It’s extremely fast!

I have a 300MHz Clam overclocked to 433MHz, so it would be interesting to see how it fares with 8.6.

How did you overclock it? It would be interesting to try it with one of mine.

There was a page somewhere but I'm not sure where it went. If 433 is unstable, go to 400.
