Does LimeWire Come in any Other Flavours?

Bonjour mes petits choux,

Does anyone here use the LimeWire client Drumbeat for os9? I've been trying to get it up and running on my Wallstreet but it won't have a bar of it. since it doesn't appear to have instructions, anyone know what to do? I open it, it doesn't connect to anything. Do I have to enter a server address or something? Anyone know any LimeWire servers?

So no-one can tell me even one LimeWire server? I think that's all I need, it doesn't come with any servers pre-installed. Tried the official LimeWire client as well, with the same issue.

I always thought LimeWire was just the client that connects to servers in the Gnutella protocol. Nothing special. However, I don't know any servers there either.

Probably not. Can you imagine StrawberryWire? Even as fil aux fraises it might be hard to digest.

You'd think they'd provide a bleedin' manual, wouldn't you? Well, I can't find even one server address on the web so I'm left to assume that all the wifi spots I've been using have blocked it. Bum. I won't be able to download all those Village People albums after all. :'( :'(

Al limewire clients are servers..that's how it works..

as far as I know, all the versions earlier than 4.0 will not connect anymore..but 4.0.8 works on OS9 tho just fine still, i think.

There is no 4.0.8 for Classic OS. Unless VersionTracker is out of date. Anyway, I tried the unofficial Drumbeat client and it still doesn't work.

Thanks! :)

I don't think it will work, but I'll give it a try anyway.

By the way, welcome to the forum. Have we a fellow Melbournian in our midst?

Nope..the *other* Victoria ..where it's almost summer and Mr Gates lives 100 miles from here (yikes!)

This LW version should work for U, incidentally, as this is the same one I've got running in OS9 and it works just fine for me

Well, I checked in OS9..i hadn't used LW for a few months (the last downloads were dated jan/07...)

Indeed, looks as if Gnutella on OS9 is officially dead. It won't connect anymore.

Frankly, for open source developers to disable functionality in classic apps is inexcusable..keep in mind that with the gnutella protocol, all the newer versions of LW would have to have an active block programmed in against these earlier versions.

On the other hand, it's understandable...we'll never end up having a colorless totallitarian world state if programmers , and people in general, keep supporting that pesky 'freedom of choice'....

They may not be actively blocking older versions from connecting. The networking protocol may have changed to use a newer technology that is not supported under Mac OS 9. If it is peer to peer and doesn't pass through a central server, then if someone else using the Mac OS 9 version happens to be online, you would probably be able to connect to them, but I doubt you'll find many people still using it. Maybe some of the 68kmla'ers might be interested in setting up a file sharing network of their own???

I'm not saying it should be used for illegal file sharing or that it should be officially endorsed by 68kmla, just that if anyone is running an older version of Limewire or Gnutella, see if you can manage to coordinate a time when another 68kmla'er is using it and see if you can connect. If it does still work, I have plenty of Macs here. I'm sure I could arrange to leave one online with some shareware/freeware files on it.

well, it's an interesting idea..and I think another way to get older macs to still be useful..

If somebody sets a date, i'll boot into 9 and 'tune in' with LW , so to speak.

However, what I noticed in the past, is that when it searches Gnutella, it only samples a small portion of the network..and appears to require a restart to sample a different portion..i.e. a few times it would show my own files in the search results, and kept doing it until I restarted it.

It may take quite a few attempts to actually *find* someone else who is definitely online with an older version.

The comment about 'warez' is truly a sad thing, too..simply because one *can* share such doesn't automatically mean one *has* to..

although i'll admit that not only have such activities tarnished LW, but other protocols such as BT (which i've only ever used for linux distros, but indespensable for that).

As i mentioned before, i haven't used LW in some time as what's on there for apps is becoming all illegal immoral or fattening.

Frankly, i think an appleshare fileshare network would be the way to go for old macs...
