Display upgrade - PM 9600/350

I know there were similar threads, but I couldn't find things that I need to know before upgrading display in my PM 9600/350. Here are some questions:

1/ What is the biggest monitor size I can hook up to 9600/350 (practically)?

2/ I have 2 graphics cards - Village Tronic 16MB and Formac Pro Media 3D Pro PNGA 80-3. Which one is better for my setup?

3/ If none of them is good I could consider getting Radeon 7000 or 9200. Will 9200 work properly under OS 9.1, or do I have to upgrade to 9.2.2?

Thanks

I guess it depends on if you have a G3/G4 installed or not and what you want to do with the system.

The Village Tronic card supports very high resolutions (and widescreen), and is fast at 2D, I'd stick with that card.  If you want to do more 3D stuff, look around for a Mac Edition Radeon 7000 PCI card, or flash a Radeon 7000 PC card yourself.

If you're talking about CRT displays, I'm pretty sure the Village Tronic will support 1600x1200 and 2048x1536, which means it'll run a monster CRT nicely. In high school, my teacher picked up a 24" Sony Trinitron. It worked beautifully at 1600x1200 and looked better than average at 2048x1536. If that card drives 16:9 monitors, then you have a bunch of options from 22-27 inches at 1920x1080 with LCD.

Thanks for your replies. Sorry, I haven’t specified some details. No, I don’t use G3/G4 card. There was one (Mach Carrier 350MHz G4), but I uninstalled it. I want to keep this Mac (apart from graphic card) in original state because a/ I have other Macs with OS X b/ I use soft which works under OS 9 and below c/ I can’t see any speed improvement with G4 card. On the contrary, I have a feeling that booting time is longer and generally he is…slower with Mach card. Maybe it’s just an impression.

As for monitor I’m looking for LCDs only. I checked my Village Tronic card maximum resolutions and the highest 2 are: 2432x1712 75Hz and 2560x960 100Hz. Would Radeon 7000 be any better than that (or faster)? I’ve noticed, there is also PAL section - is this meant for TV?

I was looking for some info about the other card Pro Media 3D Pro, unfortunately without any success. Do you know any details about it, what is it worth etc…?

Another question is - suppose I want to play an old game which usually works at 800x600, how would it look on such a big monitor? Will it be cropped, or it would be placed in the centre with black stripes around?

Mac Radeon 7000 will do 2048x1536 max with some wide screen resolutions thrown in as well, such as 1920x1200, 1920x1080, etc. List of resolutions on page 28 here: http://www2.ati.com/manuals/radeon7000userguide.pdf

If I were you I'd track down a 24" or thereabouts 1920x1080 or 1200 screen and run that along with a Mac Radeon 7000. They're fairly cheap and Mac OS 9 looks tiny at 1440x900, 1920x1080/1200 would be pretty darn tiny, there's no scaling.

I've run Mac OS 9 on a 21.5" 1920x1080 panel with my Quicksilver '02 G4. The menu bar is hilariously tiny. If you have sufficient visual acuity, it makes for a very low distraction workspace with tons of pixel real estate.

I'm running a Radeon 9200 in my 9600/200MP(stock).

The driver disk I have only gives hardware acceleration under 9.2.2(and the card can cause issues in 9.2.1 without the extensions installed), but it works great. I know a single 1920x1080 is no issue(I had it on a 1920x1200 Cinema for a while, and have 9200s in other computers running monitors of this size) and I think it can run two of this size without any trouble. In terms of pushing pixels, the Mac edition of this card has 128mb of RAM which helps it a lot.

2048x1152 in Mac OS 7.6 anyone? :) got a Radeon 9200 inside a 4400/160 (AAPL,e826). when it comes to PCI macs there ability to drive monitors falls only on the Graphics card (and OS if your using a flashed card with a reduced rom that has no NDRV) it has nothing to do with the rest of the system.

Wow, quite impressive! But to clarify things…are you sure that Radeon 9200 will work properly in systems prior to 9.2.2? Did you encounter any issues? Is it possible to install proper ATI drivers in OS 8.6 - 9.1? I understand that acceleration won’t work without this driver? Did you manage to install it in OS 7.6 system?

the Radeon 9200 AFAIK will only work with full 3d/2d in 9.2.2 (as thats the only OS the ATI drivers for that  card work in) in 9.2.1 the system will lock up in 9.1 and before the card will work fully but you wont have any 2d/3d as theres no drivers for anything before 9.2.2. make sure to install the drivers before installing the card or 9.2.2 will lock up with the card and you cant install the drivers in safe mode IIRC.  the Radeon 7000 IIRC has drivers for Mac OS 7.6 and up and can at least do 1920x1200.

Dude, I am intrigued. What kind of card is exactly is that. I see a bunch of 9200 cards for sale here locally but I doubt they will just work out of the box. I think they are Windows variants or does it matter? Let me straight up with you, this screen makes me drool! Can you describe this in more detail, what is required to get this done? How did you figure all this out and what is, NDRV?

hopefully this helps :) keep in mind while 7.6 will boot with the 9200, you wont have full graphics acceleration

So how did you get the card to output that resolution? SwitchRes or something along those lines?

Greetings All.

I was directed to come to this discussion page, because “ here “ is the info I need to get a definitive answer to, a quest..

Many years ago, I obtained a recording product called Protools TDM Mix, with a version of 5.1.3. running on a Mac 9600/350. with Mac OS 9...( I don’t remember which version of 9 ) But will dig into this mac info...soon.

Shortly after getting the system, I had an emergency, and had to tear it down and put it into storage, for about 26 years or so...

After that crisis...

I set it back up, and after a grueling ordeal with the order of card placement , everything fired up just like the day I got it...even the old CRT monitor..

I got a new flat screen monitor with a VGA port, and with an adapter to the Db-15 port on the stock IX-Micro Twin Turbo card, that works great, but I hate that Db-15 port on the Twin Turbo, with the adapter hanging off the card, always stressing the card port.

I have been searching for a great graphics card that will work with my 9600/350 and Protools, that has a VGA port, so I can dump the adapter...

Exactly ...Which graphics card could I use, that's better than the stock IX-Micro Twin Turbo, that I can just pop into the PCI slot, and get this hog going again, and where can I maybe find a card with software and drivers included ( as in, maybe a new, old, unopened box )

Last, I have an Adaptec AHA Power Domain 2940 UW, in it right now, but was buying 29402UW, to replace it with, and put that one in a G4, except this corona virus scandal in Canada killed that shipping the new unopened box .

I have an ATTO UL3d SCSI that Doesn’t recognize drives, in another Mac, so I’m trying to see if I can either get software/drivers for that one, or find another complete Adaptec 2940UL or 2940U2W...

What say Ye All.

All advice appreciated.
