Well, I seen an SE/30 baesd ethernet card on the ebay for moderate price. Not cheap, but definately not what they normally go for. somewhere in the middle.

It was sold as not working at all. Of course, the curiosity got me as to why it didnt work. So i picked it up, as I waited for the shipment from Australia, I sat and wondered why it didnt work.

Now, that I got the card today, I know WHY it was sold as not working.

Ouch.. Now i gotta figure out how im going to fix that. But the reason I posted this, is if anyone would know exactly what other ethernet cards use the same chipset, that I could pull the IC from.

any ideas?

Well, they are breaking off at the IC. I fear that if i lift the IC off with my reflow machine, itll end up breaking off then I will be stuck with a new IC anyway.

Well it turns out that some LC ethernet cards used the exact same chip/interface.

So with that in mind, technically its possible to run an LC PDS ethernet card on an SE/30 given the right fabricated adapter board to re-pin.

A, B, C can all be interchanged. They are just different die revisions.

I have seen IIsI cards that use the A version, and B version, and they will work in an SE/30 with an extender card.

I am going to have to replace the chip because the pins are not only bent, they are creased/crushed so they wont mount back down. Now, I just have to find a card that has the chip. I only have 1 LC card and its not the same chipset at all.

ill politely ask mcdermd for you,

Hey what are the chances are of getting a right angle PDS connector, and the LC Nic card working in the se/30 - IIsi ?

Well i would probably have to use the SE/30 DeclROM on the LC card, but i dont see why it wouldnt work. The chips are identical.

The quick and dirty method would be to look at the LC PDS pinout, and the 030 PDS used in the IIsi/SE30 and compare the two. Then make a wirewrap board to match em up.

The only thing I am not sure of at this point, is where the PAL/GALS place the card on the address bus.

I can get the chips from china for $3.40 a peice. There is a catch. minimum order is 100pcs. LOL... NEXT.....

I found the same chip (DP83932VF) on an Asante FriendlyNet LC Rev. A (PN: 09-00500-01) card:

The DP83932 is an ordinary Ethernet PHY. NatSemi made them, TI made them... I'm sure there were literally dozens of PC ethernet cards based around this chip, also.

Apple said:
To maintain compatibility with current addressing conventions, software should address the expansion slot as if it were NuBus™ physical slot 6 (logical slot $E)
and that . . .

PDS = $E0 0000–$EF FFFF in 24bit mode/$FE00 0000–$FEFF FFFF in 32bit mode

so that means technically an LC nic can be used in an SE/30 with a properly made adapter.

Se/30 pin: B39 - GND or /SLOT.E 68030 slot E replace in address map, Yup it occupies the same slot space as both machines, so in theory a simple passive adapter will allow an LC card to work in an SE/30.

68000 and 68020 PDS Interfaces The Macintosh SE was the first Macintosh offering a PDS expansion. The SE uses a 96-pin expansion connector. The 96-pin expansion connector on the Macintosh Portable is physically identical to that of the SE, but the pinouts and signals available are different. The 68020 PDS interface in the LC is also a 96-pin connector that is physically identical to that in the SE and Portable; however, the pinouts and signals are different.
That even confirms it better. lol. So that means with correct adapters, you could put LC ethernet cards in the SE, SE/30, and even the mac portable. lol.

That shows you how to build glue logic for a chip select signal ;-) for making your own card of course. (FPGA based ethernet, etc).

Been down one of those roads, but haven't updated the Macintosh Portable Slot Hackage thread. There are two signals on the Portable's PDS that are flies in the ointment IIRC. That's for a straight processor upgrade though, so I didn't look at the slot addressing/memory map aspects of the Portable PDS. I can tell you that there is next to nothing/officially nothing in the power budget for an expansion card however . . .

. . . makes me wonder why they even bothered to put that slot in there. :p
