Cutting the case of a Mac SE

See Action Retro’s YouTube for the whole “Cursed Mac SE” saga, though he just restored and upgraded what someone else had already done years ago… Iomega Jaz drive and an optical drive crammed into a Mac SE.

Such machines are harder to find in good shape these days, so I’d refrain from doing anything harsh to an otherwise working unit. External drive would probably be the best bet.

It might also be worth finding a later SE FDHD board and swapping that in place. Early SE boards used the same resistors that the Plus used for RAM upgrades. The later SE (including some of the later 800K versions) boards had a jumper to select the memory size, plus the FDHD versions had the battery holder, instead of a soldered battery.
