Compatible Systems RiscRouter 3000e

I bought one of these recently for $10. Very nice old router with two ethernet (thick, thin, 10 base T) and two LocalTalk ports. Sounds like it can be used as an AppleTalk-ethernet bridge, among other things. I found some downloads on the Cisco web sites - a quickstart manual and the Compatiview software.

What I have been able to do is log on to it with ZTerm and reset the password. Thought I was losing it, but the password apparently needs to be less than nine characters! My first idea for a new pw was nine characters and it kept saying that the change was ok, but then after it restarted the new pw was gone. Next I put Compatiview 4.8 on my 8600, but it can't find the router on my AppleTalk, so I need to go back in via terminal and start entering my IP and AppleTalk settings before I can go further.

Anybody ever configure one of these? The quickstart manual has saved me so far, it tells me enough to basically get the thing running. But since I don't really know what I am doing it would be handy to have the full manual or at least some advice! My internet comes through a gigabit router in my basement, to a switch in my room where my computers connect via DHCP. I am hoping that the 3000e can function stand-alone to allow connected serial Macs to access the web, or other boxes here. Since this thing is probably pre-DHCP I don't know how it will play with the others. And how would DNS resolve?

Today I am just doing basic IP and AppleTalk settings. Wondering if I should create a DHCP reservation for it on my main router. At this rate it will take me a few weeks of on-off fussing with it, lots of trial and error. A bit daunting, but interesting also.

Hi CJ,

Sounds al little bit the same as my question about the FastPath5 router. Not much people who know about these network devices..... I managed to get my FastPath working by trial and error. I emailed also with someone I found in an old posting in a newsgroup and he send me more software. Could be an idea to Google newsgroups about this router to do the same.

The Fastpath has an auto config option. With this option it will give itself the correct AppleTalk information. You need to open and close your AppleTalk control panel (System 7.6) and then it bridges between EtherTalk en LocalTalk. Then you add IP forwarding for LocalTalk and IP forwarding works too.

On the router the Ethernet part needs to be in a different sub net as LocalTalk

In my case the Ethernet site has 192.168.62.11 and the LocalTalk part 192.168.60.1

My internet router has IP adres 192.168.62.1 and the FastPath uses this router to connect to the internet (default router).

Maybe you are able to find settings like these somewhere.

Could you post the quickstart manual? Maybe together we can find out how to get your router working!
