Classic boots to horizontal lines

I have a Classic Motherboard in a Classic II for testing. They both used the same analog board and I still need to recap the Classic. I have recapped the Classic and most of the time it boots to these horizontal lines. Sometimes it will actually boot to the question mark floppy. sometimes it will chime. but most of the time it gives me this screen. I have seen other posts that suggest its the rom. If its the rom could it boot sometimes and other times not? Thanks for any help you could provide. If I should replace the rom any suggestions where to find them? no luck finding any.

Recap first then see what happens. Hopefully its salvageable, the Classics have really bad cap leakage. Same with the analog. If you don't want to do it yourself, I can recommend Thomas from Amiga of Rochester.

I did recap the mother board already. Like I said it boots sometimes to question mark floppy with a chime but most of the time its this horizontal like thing. It did this prior to recap also.

Oops, sorry, missed that. There might be cap goo stuck under some chips still? Someone else may have another suggestion. Chances are a bad ROM would cause it to not boot reliably. If it is a socketed ROM, you can try reseating.

I cleaned the board again and still getting lines but somethings are changing, sounds and scribbles on the screen after a bit of time. I think I need to keep cleaning. It was pretty messy.

I've read on here you can try letting it soak for an hour+ in alcohol to try and get under the chips. Might help.

Did you measure the voltages at the floppy port? Must be 5 and 12 V. I would recap the analog board too if it was not done so far.

I used a analog board in my Classic II that was recapped and the same model analog board, but I've never checked the voltage on that board. My classic II motherboard boots no problem but will check that next and yes I am recapping the Classic analog board. Just waiting for the caps.

The analog board used on the Classic and Classic II has a boatload of electrolytic caps all over it. Are ALL of them usually replaced during a "recap" operation, or is there a recomended (partial) list of the most notorious caps to focus on?

I have recapped two Classic II boards and did replace every cap. You can by a cap kit with all the caps you need at console5.com.
This was the mess under my Classic board that is awaiting new caps to arrive. For me this is the section of the board that has been the worst.

***UPDATE***

Washed board about 100 times, nothing. Started looking for broken traces and found one. Fixed it and now it boots. BUT when I turn it on it goes to the same screen with horizontal lines for about 4 seconds then the screen goes gray and then boots. I have no sound. The broken trace I found was near the sound chip. I am going to check more traces. ALSO one time I had an error message and turned off the computer. When I turned it back on the message screen was still there with some a few crazy lines then like before it booted. ODD, its useable except for the sound. Thanks for everyone's help its been leading me in the right direction.

Final Update - I had to remove the sound chip and fix a broken trace under the sound chip. Once that happened I am booting with sound and sound works fine. Complete fixed and everything is fully recapped logic board and analog board. Thanks for the help along the way.

Nice one! These can be a bit of a challenge to get going but it's worth it when you hear that sweet chime and everything works. :D
