Classic and Classic II parts interchangeability? And RAM questions?

A friend gave me a Mac Classic and a Classic II:
  • The Classic works perfectly! (I can see cap leakage on the logic board, so it and the analog board will need recapped, but not immediately)
  • The Classic II has jailbars and some video instability.
Can I safely swap the logic board out of the Classic II into the Classic to see if the problems follow the logic board or not?

Also, the Classic has a RAM expansion board in it, which is populated, giving it a total of 4MB of RAM. I have several sticks of RAM lying around from other upgrades. Will larger capacity RAM modules work in the expansion board? Maybe 4MB sticks for a total of 10MB?

I don't know how much RAM the Classic II has in it yet (there's two unidentified sticks in the sockets), but until I get it to boot, it will be hard to tell. Will a Classic II take 8MB or 16MB sticks of RAM like the SE/30?

The logic boards are interchangeable between Classic and Classic 2.
The 30 pin SIMMs are interchangeable but not the ram expansion module.

Max ram in a classic is 4MB. On board is 1mb, ram expansion has 1mb and 2 slots for 1 mb SIMMs.

The C2 can take 4MB modules for a total of 10.

^ what he said.

The Classic was meant to accept a Classic II logic board as an official upgrade by Apple so they're mostly interchangeable with the exception of the Classic and its special RAM card vs. the Classic II and its special FPU/ROM expansion card. Neither model was intended to have any sort of internal expansion card otherwise (Apple said that there was both too little space and too little power available to accomodate them) but there were a handful of accelerators and Interware made a Vimage 8-bit video card for the Classic II.
The neat thing about the Classic II is that it had that ROM expansion card and there was a member here (Alaska360, maybe?) who was selling ROM expansion modules so you could customize them.

Unfortunately, that slot is damn near useless for ROMs, because while you can put a ROM in it, it isn't probed by the Slot Manager, so you can't do much useful with it: no declroms, no auto-loaded drivers, etc.

Awesome! Thank you gentlemen. I'm always grateful for member's willingness to share their knowledge. I had looked up the RAM specs on everymac.com. But it hasn't always proven to be 100% accurate. Like by Performa 630CD could take a LOT more RAM than 36MB. I think I have 128MB in it. 😮

Again, thank you.
