can't install 8.1

i have tried several images of mac os 8.0 and 8.1 but each time i mount the image then try to run the installer on my quadra 605, i get the message "This program cannot run on your Computer. See the documentation for more information."

now i have more than enough specs to run 8.1 so i don't know the snag i am hitting. i am running a full 040 33 mhz with 36 mb ram and a full 1mb vid and the hard drive is a 2 gb scsi

do i need the helper disk aka the 8.0 run me first floppy or is there something with the 040 non lc cpu that i am not seeing?

Out of curiosity, which images have you tried installing from?

From experience I know some model-specific discs/images of 8.0 are out there, and often not labeled as such. E.g. the beige "Gossamer" Power Macintosh G3. And even then, if the G3's ROM version didn't match the the media's version of 8.0, it wouldn't boot or even install.

For my 040 Macs, I've had the best luck with the Apple Legacy Recovery CD's images of 8.0 and 8.1. The Anthology Collection's version would likely work as well, though I haven't used that specific flavor. I'm fairly confident a retail 8.0 image might work, but I haven't tried it myself.

I haven't seen anything on Apple's own specifications for either the 605 or the LC/Performa 475 variant that restricts 8.0/8.1 on the presence of an FPU on the 040, like you mentioned. And after 7.5.5 the requirement of a system enabler was obsoleted in the system builds, so I'm not aware of an extra utility required to get 8.0 up and running. Maybe someone else knows if something exists, but I'd be curious to know the image you're using.

Also, you might be on top of it, but make sure the drive is properly initialized, before you install, with the correct tool and disk drivers*. With very few exceptions, I've been fine with just the latest version of Drive Setup from that Legacy Recovery CD image, especially since you want to install 8.

*This might not be an issue, but if the drive was formatted on a PowerPC Mac with the intention of installing 8.1, HFS+ is not supported on 68k Macs as the boot partition.

i'm doing a full low level format with the disc right now on an Avid 9GB external scsi and hopefully i should be able to install 8.1 on it. i tried earlier but it was saying that i needed to use the "Install Mac OS" installer instead of hunting through the folders to try to install 8.0 first

i am still having issues, as in the legacy software cd says i need to use the "mac os install" app which i cant find anywhere. also if i use the net install.scr i get a (159) error.
i might yet resort to the wishiwere app

i am wondering, since i did the overclock chip mod, would that be causing the issue with the gestalt id? since it's no longer a 25mhz but a 33 mhz and i have the jumper on it to think its a quadra series

It's possible that is the issue. Also, have you turned on 32-bit memory addressing?

If you're still running System 7.5.5 or older on your Mac, go to the Memory control panel and click the radio button to turn on 32-bit addressing. Reboot, and it will be active. 7.6 and newer require it to be on, so if you boot the computer with it in 24-bit mode, it will restart automatically with 32-bit mode active.

If you're trying to boot 7.6 or newer the computer automatically restarts in 32bit. It shouldn't be an issue.

The gestalt being wrong might be an issue but I didn't think overclocking changed it on the 475. If you open System Profiler or TattleTech, what does it say the machine ID is?

The overclocked 475 board does change gestalt ID.

Thanks MrFahrenheit - I couldn't remember if it did or not on the 475.

In which case, install while using Wish I Were to spoof the 475 or 605 gestalt, or use the "option" trick to install it anyway.
