This is actually three seperate conquests, in a way. One was entirely accidental. Seems these classic Macs just fall onto my head now I'm not looking

First: 14 keyboards (no photos yet), among them a boxed Apple Standard Keyboard, an AppleDesign keyboard (I love the adjusting mechanism, but it's stiff and the entire keyboard is a little large), some Apple Extended Keyboard IIs, and some Apple Keyboard IIs. Also, several mouse, split between Apple Desktop Bus Mouse II and Apple Desktop Bus Mouse. And a Macally ADB mouse for good measure.

Cost: $5 on eBay. Plus the difficulty of using only Public Transport to get them home. ;-)

Second: One fully functioning Colour Classic, virgin. Didn't have a keyboard and mouse with it, but thanks to the aforementioned haul, I was able to remedy that. ;-) CRT was a little out of whack so I aligned it.

Cost : Free, given to me by the guy who sold me the ADB gear. (Thanks, Lt. Bunsen for that tip!)

This is the Colour Classic after I changed the harddrive from a 40MB to 160MB, put in two 2MB SIMMs to up the RAM to 8MB, and while I was adjusting the picture:

Third: One LaserWriter Select 360, complete with cables, disks, and spare toner cartridge.

Opened it to up the RAM from 8MB to 16MB, and my my how gorgeous it is

Plans are to set up the Colour Classic with System 7.1.1 :cc: and use the LaserWriter to do occasional DTP, and to have a nice little computer in my room for if I'm bored and don't want to make too much noise.

I also have a Daynaport E/LC on the way (revision unknown, i only handled it briefly) which I intend to go straight into the Colour Classic - my IIvx has a NuBus Ethernet card in it, so perhaps when I get the IIvx running I can do something AppleTalk-ish.

Nice, those Color Classics are hard to find cheap let alone free. Did you use a set of those plastic special TV screwdrivers to adjust the video (I snagged a set from Radioshack when I got my first compact)?

We have a LWS360, I am quite fond of it but almost every cap in it has failed so the output is buggered. If you get blotchyish fading on one or both sides and the pattern is the same on multiple pages then check the caps.

Another possibility, which fixed the LWS360 at my high school (which I now have in my storage unit) is that the toner cartridge has gone bad or empty. We replaced ours (which is expensive, but they are rated at 10,000 or so pages, so you get a LOT of mileage out of them) and it worked perfectly. The unit had probably 15,000 pages or so on it, I think it was on its original or maybe second toner cart since it was purchased new in '93.

Ours was taken into an AASP and we were told by the tech that he took it apart and cleaned everything(mirrors, lenses, etc) and swapped carts and such but he just did not know what was wrong. He even had another LWS360 sitting on a shelf there with the same issue. I took it apart last year sometime(it had been taken into the AASP back in 2001/02 IIRC) and I noticed that most of the caps had failed. Everything aside from the PSU; that one part still looked ok.

This did happen over a period of a couple years in the very late 90s and all our other hardware from then is still ok so.. *shrug*

To anyone with these printers:

If swapping the toner cart does not work and each page has the same blotchy pattern of printing failure then check the capacitors.

Anyway, back on topic.

They did, it was called the Colour Classic II and was released in Asia and Canada as far as I know, and the logic board is identical to the LC 550 for all intents and purposes, meaning if you can get an LC 550 logic board it will go in without any hackery and you are able to use the same back panel I/O shield thingymabob.

And you'll be able to install up to 32MB of RAM in addition to the 4MB on the logicboard using 72-pin SIMMs! (By now, I'd expect you could unofficially have more RAM, but it could be an addressing limitation I'm unaware of also.)

Maybe if I run into an LC 550 I'll install it into the Colour Classic for fun

A Color Classic with a 550 logic board is indeed a thing of beauty (I have one).

I have, however, recently acquired (by sibling proxy and at a distance of a 2 hr drive) a lot of parts which has in it an LC520 logic board, and once I get my hands on it, will also be trying it out in the CC.

The 520 is similar to the 550 except that it runs at 25MHz rather than 33MHz. Like the 550, however, it does have a 32-bit bus, and can accept up to a 128MB 72-pin SIMM, so it would make a huge improvement over a stock CC. We'll see if it works.

Oh yeah, I heard about that. You going to be selling any of the 575 boards on? I've heard a 575 with a full 040 in it is pretty sweet, and memories of the last time i worked on one seem to indicate the same

Good luck...I've actually never seen a Performa 550 (there was no LC variant, only a Performa variant of the 550, the LC series machines were the LC520, 575 and 580) here in Australia...I'm not even sure if they shipped here, and if they did, I can't imagine they'd be all that common. You've got much more of a chance of finding a 575 - they were extremely popular with schools, so tracking down one of those, especially in Sydney should be no trouble at all.

An update: This is the output from the printer: (a followup post with pics of the Colour Classic running will ... well, follow.)

As you will see, the printouts are generally gray, and there is a small pattern on the photoconductor that I'm unable to identify (I can't see it, it's only showing on the page) but I don't want to switch in a new toner cartridge only to discover that the problem is elsewhere. Any ideas are welcome.

Clean the rollers and optical mirror of loose toner or dust, and most likely you need a new toner cart.
