At last, a IIfx

So I was browsing eBay one night and I found a listing for a non-working/parts-only IIfx. Immediately snatched it up and got it in today! The case is trashed - lots of bent pieces, major scuffs, and it's even missing the top lid. I threw it all into my regular II's case and found out the soft power circuit is dead. Dunno why; I have proper voltage at the batteries and components in the circuits but somewhere between the circuit and the PSU power on pin, the signal is lost somewhere. For now I just have a CR2032 and a pushbutton across the PSU power on pin and GND. It works. Ish. I replaced a few capacitors that needed it and cleaned up as much of the junk as I could.

Configuration-wise, I combined parts from the new IIfx (Seagate hard drive, 2x Superdrives), my original II (80MB Quantum, case, PSU, ethernet, SuperMac Spectrum/8, Toby) and a Centris 650 (DAW card). Someone I know also linked me to a NIB RasterOps 108+ card, so hooray for dual 8-bit video cards? This thing flies on a new install of System 7.1.

Here's the fun part though... This machine shipped from the Seattle/Tacoma area. Can you think of any famous companies in that area that would have been known for Mac products? Turns out, on the original case there's this little sticker:

Apparently this IIfx I bought is an ex-Aldus machine! Do you think it was used in the development of PageMaker at all?

Really cool because of the history at Aldus. Makes sense they would have a high-end machine like this.

Nice find with the Aldus machine! Love the maxed-out build.

If you left any electrolytics un-replaced, try that first to help fix the soft power. Even if they are not leaking they are near-certain to be no longer performing to spec.

Nice score, always a bonus to know the history of your machine.

I wish you luck with it, this is my dream Mac!
