Asante Nubus Card

I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this? I rarely have ever worked on Nubus slot Ethernet cards in the past and more recently. I have a Performa 600 which I put in a brand new Asante Nubus Ethernet card. It has 3 types of connectors.. one is an RJ45 ethernet jack. I am getting connectivity but I don't think I have the proper drivers installed.. I've tried two different Asante installers and one with the most recent drivers that Asante released. I am running 7.6.1... Any thoughts on what I should try?? It says ASANTE-MC3NB on the card.

What is it that makes you think it is not working if you are getting connectivity? What else is going on? Are you able to connect to any network services?

Well I get a green flickering connectivity light on the card. When I switch to AppleTalk I get flickering orange light for a little bit after it has made connection. At the switch I get no light indicators what so ever. I've tried Ethertalk Phase 2 and have swapped it around with different versions.. one doesn't work and one does.. I've tried different Asante installers.. even the last one they put out. Now I also have a Turbo 601 in it boosting it to a PPC... I am not sure if that makes any difference.. but I have installed the drivers with the PPC enabled and the installer appears to have recognized the right installation.

So I have tried to connect via a PBG3 over Ethernet with AppleTalk running and file sharing... the Performa doesn't appear on the G3 and I tried vice versa.. It's been so long since I have done this and I haven't messed around with AppleTalk in quite some time. I did set it to DHCP in the TCP/IP control panel on the Performa 600 to see if it grabs an address and it doesn't...

I have done regular modem port AppleTalk connectors to the G3 before from some other older machines such as a PB100 and whatnot with no issue.. I think this is all boiling down to the proper control panels and extensions for the Asante card and the Performa running 7.6.1

Not sure if I'm understanding, but you'd need a crossover cable to connect two computers directly together. Auto MDI-X, the feature of the Ethernet to allow you to use a standard cable for this, was defined in 802.3ab and not ratified until then (1000baseT / Gigabit Ethernet). There are a few 10/100 cards that will do it, but the PBG3 is not one of them afaik.

It sounds like he had a switch. Does this particular card play nice with auto-switching routers also, I would ask?

Yes I am connected to a small switch off of my router, with some other IP connected things. I do understand a cross over cable for one computer to another. On one connection I’m actually running a serial to ip adapter successfully. It is a 10/100 4 port switch.. I think it has to do with the Asante extensions and OS compatibility. I may just install 7.1 or 7.5 on an external drive. Then run the Asante installer driver and see how it plays with an older OS. If I remember correctly back in the day the whole change to Open Transport kind of convoluted things. I do think it’s an OS and Asante driver issue. I just thought maybe someone might have dealt with this before. I haven’t used Nubus cards in a very long time…

Trust me, I found that out the hard way with my SE MacCon. Won't work with anything even a tiny bit modern. Trial and error...

Auto speed negotiation doesn't work with the MC3NB card. You need to set the speed manually on the other side of the connection to 10mbps.
