Hi everybody

Is there any convenient tool for the classic Macintosh to send/receive AEP pings?

Thanks! Where can I get it? A quick search on macintoshgarden hasn‘t yielded any results…

(on re-reading, that post sounded patronising; not intended as such, more just that the Garden's search engine is rather sensitive to punctuation or something?)

Some search engines are rather unhelpful indeed – did you ever search for things like Macintosh II, PCI or A/UX here on 68kmla? 😅

Btw thanks, I‘ve found it!

Amazon's search engine is bloody worthless.
Google used to be pretty good, if not the best, but that was back in 2006...

Nowadays, I'm not sure. It feels like results aren't as relevant as they used to be, especially for more niche topics, such as classic Macs (ads, on the other hand, are everywhere, of course, and they're so relevant sometimes, it's creepy!)

For example, a few years ago (I think sometime around mid 2018 or so), I was trying to search on Google Images for photos of a Macintosh Plus to show to someone. instead, I got countless results for some vaporwave artist who named themselves, perplexingly, "Macintosh Plus" (yes, that's correct!), with nary a photo of the actual computer anywhere on the first few pages. I gave up and looked at the Plus' Wikipedia article instead, as I recall.

I've been hoping that maybe this has since been fixed (it has been 3 or 4 years, after all!), but alas, no! However, they must've readjusted their algorithm somehow, as at least now I see actual Plus photos mixed in, so at least I have a chance of finding... a photo of a Plus ("Macintosh Plus'" album, incidentally, is titled Floral Shoppe, in case anybody cares...).

Sorry for the off-topic rant, but sheesh....

"some vaporwave artist" is kinda underselling it a bit --- Floral Shoppe was the breakout "hit" that launched the vaporwave genre into the popularity it enjoyed. There are likely many more people in the last ten years who have listened to "Macintosh Plus" than have (in the same interval) used or even been interested in a real Macintosh Plus.

So, is it Google or is it us? :)

(The results changes you notice may also reflect the cultural fortunes of vaporwave rather than any significant algorithm change.)

@stepleton I think i knew that (I got curious and looked it up), but I'm not very aware of how big a scene it is as I've never followed it (I basically discovered it (vaporwave) by accident while searching for Mac Plus the computer, as I said in my last post).

What exactly is vaporwave, anyway? I think I know (in the vaguest possible sense) that it has something to do with taking jazz music recordings, slowing them down, and looping the result.

EDIT: Hmm.... the use of 80s and 90s technology for its imagery seems like it could tie into this hobby quite naturally...
