Apple Network Server 500/132

Oh and an FYI to anyone who’s upgrading their RAM on their Mylex DAC960 Raid card it will take up to a 32 MB FPM Parity 72 pin RAM stick. Non-parity EDO didn’t work.

And I think I mentioned this before. I turned off the cache battery in the Raid Utility software you boot on from floppy. I removed my NiMH battery just in case I forget it and it leaks.. like a Lisa system board. It’s not like I need extreme performance on a vintage server…

Hey there I wanted to reach out to you Network Server 500/700 owners I have all the documentation to the users manual (user manual not service manual I have that also but it’s online) for these I’m not sure if it’s online I looked but couldn’t find it. does anyone need it or would it be any use to you all. I also have documentation on using the RAID card and using AIX and ATalk.

Wow... I thought I was pretty much the only one with an ANS. I'm so happy to find this forum!
I have an ANS 700/200. It's got 3 of the original Apple tagged 9GB Ultra-SCSI drives, an 18GB Quantum, a second Dell branded Quantum (I don't recall the size), the larger Apple tagged DAT drive, and an 8X CD-ROM. I've added an Open Firmware compatible SATA PCI card. I'm intending to try adding a large SATA drive or two at the fixed drive mounts in the back of the machine. After running the server for many years (NetBSD), the power supply failed. I put it away for about 10 years. I recently rebuild the power supply and I'm now getting back into it!

I'm very interested in getting a copy of the RAID card's Apple modified ROM. My ANS doesn't have a RAID card and I would like to seek one out. Could you imagine an ANS with RAID which controls an array of BlueSCSI in each tray? Sounds like fun to me (and non-permanent).

I'm also on the look out for a spare ANS 700 power supply (non-working is fine). I have a spare ANS 500 power supply if anyone is in need.
It really is amazing that there are more of us in the world with ANS'.

I'd suggest not using v1 BlueSCSIs, or chances are it would be a non-functional RAID array ;) they're a little temperamental, especially when used in unusual situations.

With respect to your questions, I recommend tagging the users you are aiming them at in case they're not online frequently and miss your questions. To tag someone, type an @ followed by their name.

Glad to hear you're getting that monster up and running again. Sadly I've never seen one.

Oh, has there been horror stories? I've been getting ready to have some PCBs made for BlueSCSI V2 and give it a try in some of my other Macs. Does Version 2 exist due to the issues you allude to?

The V1 has a few issues, worth generally avoiding. They don't buffer the MCU pins and SCSI ends up overloading the pins, so they don't always last. Then they don't do termination properly, plus they assume they are the last item in the chain, so if you have more than one, issues... Other things to.

We get a frustrating number of people wanting the forum to troubleshoot them so it was/is frustrating that the V1 has so many issues. Every week there is at least one post asking for help.

Additionally, I understand they have compatibility issues especially with some non-mac SCSI systems, which could include the ANS, I don't know.
