Apple IIGS

Hi, 

I purchased a IIGS pre  lockdown, and in a few weeks I intend to start work on the unit.

so I’m prepped I thought I’d ask you guys with more experience than me  what to expect?

the unit has issues but I’m not sure where to start. 
 

im more used to classics and classic II s.

just fancied a change, here is a pic of the first issue, just to get me going

IIGS's are really quite fun machines to work with!

I think the pattern that you have on the screen may be indicative of a bad RAM chip somewhere. I've heard that RAM chips made by Micron fail frequently in Apple IIs. (This could be wrong, so if it is, feel free to correct me, anyone!)

am I to understand that Apple II board (any model) do not suffer from leaky caps and are generally tough .

just need to rig up a battery compartment that’s slightly less hassle.

can anyone help with a SCSI card , anywhere other than eBay that sells 80s computer components.

Try re-seating the CPU.

Mass storage is a bit tricky these days. My go-to was the CFFA3000 when it was in production, it was the "cheaper" option. SCSI cards for Apple IIs tend to fetch a premium, although there was someone selling reproductions of the Apple Rev. C SCSI card on ebay awhile back. Don't know if those are still being made. I think ReactiveMicro still sells the MicroDrive Turbo IDE controller as well.

Last resort would be to use the FloppyEmu in Smartport mode. Its slow compared to the cards, but it works.

The Booti is the best current way to go for HD emulation.  It's currently out of stock but you can get on the email notification list for when it's back in stock which should be fairly soon.  You could also go with the ReActiveMicro MicroDrive/Turbo, but it's harder to get programs onto the CF card, whereas with the Booti you can just swap a USB thumb drive between the GS and your modern computer to get stuff on there.

Hey there,

I’ve got a IIgs and am cleaning it up. Will follow along. I got kits to recap the motherboard and power supply, but no sign of leaking. I am worried about the little battery.

I got the USB boot drive and it’s awesome. May get a UEthernet. Haven’t solved the video problem yet either. I plugged it into an old LCD monitor and of course it looked terrible.

Definitely remove the soldered on battery and replace it with one of those kits to mount it in a holder off-board.
