Airport Extreme/Wireless Spots

Airport Extreme cards can connect to ordinary wireless points, can't they? And you don't need any extra software to do it, surely? An iBook I'm using doesn't pick up any wireless spots - the best I've managed is it picked up the computer-to-computer network put out by the Orinoco card in my Wallstreet. But as for wireless spots, it picks up nothing - I've tried Internet Connect, the Airport admin tool and the Network Utility and can't get a thing.

I've been ripped off big time with this iBook and before I complain to the seller, I want to make sure this is actually another fault of the machine and I'm not doing something wrong.

Yup, should be able to connect to 802.11 b/g access points. Any available networks should appear in the Airport menu in the menu bar.

if it picks up an ad-hoc network then it must be able to pick up any other wifi setup too.

i know you have been through it all, but it does suggest you have missed something.

its not set to pick up a particular wifi network is it? what about network keys, hex or ascii?

i cant see how a card could broken in only such a specific way - in that it can do computer to computer, but not access points.

Try updating the Airport software, manually if necessary.

Latest Airport Update

That update requires 10.4.8, so if you're not there, just do some browsing around on Apple's site if necessary for the manual install.
