4400 memory 5v

Hello all. I wanted to ask a couple of questions. I'll put them first then the story later..

1) Anyone know if 5v 168pin EDO will work in a 4400/160? I've seen that it's 3.3v only.

2) Anyone know where I can source 2x 64mb DIMM's to go in mine?

I've got mine dug out and going and want to use it in more permanent fashion. I've got 3x 32mb in it atm but the 160mb would be vastly better. Thanks to Gunther for the care package, in there was a 256kb L2 cache COAST module which makes about 13% better benchwombles running on a clean 8.6 install.

I've seen a bunch of memory sellers selling RAM and listing compatible machines .. 4400/5500/6400 ..and to my understanding they take different memory so I've held fire.

Thank you all in advance. :)

- Only 3.3V EDO will work (5400, 5500 and 6400, 6500 use 5v FPM or EDO)
- right, not easy as most ebay listings for 4400 or Motorola StarMax and other Tanzania Clones unfortunately show only 16 or 32mb

I've purchased some RAM. I took a punt with two different ones that have chips that the datasheet says 'should' work. I shall report back if they do.

So! 50% glorious success. Half the memory I purchased that was apparently 3.3v was not. The other half operates at 3.3v nicely.

160mb tests fine. I've made a little app in Symantec C++ that allocates as much ram as it can, fills it will silly characters and tests. Seems good.

Quite happy with that. The DIMMS that work are a little odd. They have a really 'wide' key gap. For reference, please excuse the alignment perspective from the DIMM at the bottom. Despite where my family hails from I have the standard number of hands and arms in the traditional places.. it will all look better a few images in ..they are the same length but the south DIMM has really chonky IC's so ..perspective *hand wave*

This shows perspective and gap a little better.. (slightly reminds me of a date's teeth once when I was very young...)

All works *really* well. I got it from: https://www.a1used-computers.com/ which is in Australia, so if you don't live in Godzone.. you'll need to convert from pacific peso to whatever the rest of the world uses. :D

So now the 4400 has Radeon 7000, 160mb RAM, SATA controller (so damned more snappy) and an etherwomble card. Chuffed!

Maybe one day a CPU upgrade. Next I need to fix the block battery, tear it to pieces and de-smokerify the thing. Pih!

Best Wishes!

Nice upgrade, I can confirm a 64MB Crucial / Micron MT32LD864AG-6 3.3V 60n/s 168-Pin EDO Memory Module works in mine. Now to find another…

Check the A1 guy. He has a lot of older stuff. Because it's second hand, I'd recommend ordering a spare. I tend to do that with my machines, wrap it in anti-static and tape it inside the system. Old habit. :)
