400K drives

Well, I've just had a very satisfying morning. I opened up my 512K Mac (see earlier thread) and took out the 400K disk drive. It was reading ok, but not ejecting - a very common problem with these old drives as the grease dries up and glues the eject levers. I cleaned it all out and got it working. Very good already, but the real bonus was next. I had a faulty 400K external that I'd failed to repair before, but now by having a working one to compare with, I was able to determine exactly the problem and rectify it! It too is now working perfectly! All that's left to do (this is this afternoon's task) is to put all the best bits into my 128K mac so it once again has a 400K drive, has a working external, I'll use the 512K monitor because the 128K one has a scratch, and everything will be perfect and as for the original mac! :)

I'm happy for you, Kallikak. And whenever I read reports like this, I long to see some nice photos too! If you have the time, would you might Flickrizing some for us? Let us see some of your handywork. I doubt any of us ever get tired of looking at the internals of our old Macs, and sometimes we find things in the shots of others we've never seen before.

Thanks!

I should have thought of pictures while I had it all opened up, since surely some others will have to go throught this same procedure. I am 75% through "documenting" my collection with photos and descriptions etc, and so soon I will be putting some pictures up. I'll try to remember to take some shots next time I am tinkering around inside one of these drives.

I appreciate that. And if you happen to have a tripod, consider giving that a try over flash. I've found that my own photos have been much improved without the strobe. (Of course, Photoshop Camera RAW certainly helps too!)
