Hi Friends,

Recently, the moderators and I have dealt with a few forum members who were more or less spending most of their time causing problems for the rest of us. In light of that, I wanted to take a few moments to discuss the purpose of this forum, and what the moderators strive for when they're moderating and what I want everybody in the community to strive for and think about when they're posting.

My first reminder is that you should all consider using the report button more frequently, and appropriately. It's not a "Mommy he called me a name!" button -- but it is a button that you should push if you see spam, extraordinarily foul language, unnecessarily harsh or uncivil language, etc. You as a forum member don't need to moderate, that's what the moderators are for.

Here's another consideration: When we as the moderators moderate, and when I read the forum, what I'm looking for is a workplace friendly forum. It's no secret that the Internet is far from a... "nice" place -- but that doesn't mean we can't clean up our{1} little part of it! More or less, when I talk about being workplace friendly, what I mean is that I, like many of us, am employed. At my workplace, I have the great fortune of being allowed to use the Internet between tasks, which means I'm frequently on here when I am at work. At my work, there are all kinds of people, and specifically, I have a few bosses who are extremely conservative folks. To these people, threats of violence, general uncivility toward other people, and the use of some particularly unsavory language are not only a very bad thing but is just unnecessary. I share their opinion on this matter.

Above all else, as Wil Wheaton says, "Don't be a dick." Even though this is the Internet, please consider that all of the other people on here are people and deserved to be treated with the kind of basic dignity that indicates you also believe this. If you don't believe that humans deserve to be treated well, please either adjust your view on this, treat other humans well anyway or find a new forum before it becomes our responsibility to the other users to remove you.

The main reason to have this reminder is this really is a community that's here for the purpose of the discussion and preservation of Macs. To this end, discussing religion, politics, ethics, etc, will probably never end well. As a heads up, we are currently working on the wording to simply disallow those topics.

As always, you can contact any of the moderation & administration team for more information, or clarification.

Best,

--Cory W.

{1} -- As you may know, I'm now hosting the 68kMLA with some of my personal resources, a slice from slicehost.com. I host my

own web site here, stenoweb.net, so it's not as though it's going out of my way. Currently, donations go to the domain registration as I've been too lazy to think about exactly how much of the $20/month resource the 68kMLA uses.
