12" Monitors for Mac LCs

I know this could technically be filed under peripherals, but since most everyone seems to prefer these on the LC/LCII I will post it here.

I have some questions about the 12" Apple RGB, that monitor that is tailor-made for sitting on top of an LC.

1. What is the current supply of these looking like?

2. Is it possible to have a "dead pixel" on one of these?

3. What is the make/model of picture tube used in these (like how the Compacts use the Clinton or Samsung tube)?

4. How can I fix one that has a problem with slipping out of focus? (It will be fine but then when it's been on for a while will get really blurry)

I tossed an old Acer monitor I had because of it getting blurry when on a while. From what I recall there is a set of resisters that are in line with some pots that control focus. After a bunch of years these resisters get hot and burn out causing problems.

You need a schematic for your monitor.

Don't know the answers to your questions, but one of my favorite monitors was the 12" monochrome in the same form factor. It did 640x480 and was extremely lightweight. I had two of them, but both eventually developed jitters.

A crt can't quite develop a bad pixel in the same way an LCD can. The closest failure mode is screen burn, where a stationary pattern is displayed for so long that the phosphors actually cook a bit, causing a permanent ghost image of that pattern. But I'm sure you already knew that. And that screensavers were invented to prevent this problem.

As for focus drift, many things can cause it. Excessive brightness is a common culprit, so if you're someone who likes to crank up the brightness to the max, back off a bit and see if that helps.

If that isn't the problem, then post back.

I don't know about the 12" monitors, but I have 2 14" Apple monitors and 2 17" and they all work great. Apple's pre-ADC monitors tend to last a long time, if my own experience is any indication.

I've got a 12" RGB Display. As tomlee59 says, CRTs can't develop dead pixels but burning is possible. Perhaps what you think is a dead pixel is in fact a mark someone made with a biro on the screen lol!

Unfortunately, the video cable doesn't quite want to sit snugly in my 475's video port, so the picture tends to flicker quite a bit!
