Today I stopped at a thrift store on the way home. Initially I saw a nice WiFi router, but turned around and saw this:
Looked at the price tag:
And thought to myself : I would have to be an idiot to not buy this.
Now that it is home with me, I can see if it actually works.
It’s a 1.25ghz...
Today I picked up a 22” Dell IPS monitor for $8. I thought it had an HDMI connector, but it turned out to be a DisplayPort connector.
It also had a HDMI to VGA converter attached to the VGA cable than came with the monitor.
It works great with my new to me Mac Mini.
It was once a visitor...
Bought a Mac Mini off eBay, it arrived a few days early. It was advertised as having no operating system, but found out it still had MacOS installed - but all user accounts are password protected.
Comparing against my Ryzen mini PC for comparison.
I bought 16GB of memory for it and a 480GB...
I bought a TI-86 graphing calculator a few weeks ago off of eBay. The screen had some occasional glitches so I searched for a replacement screen. While I didn't find a screen I found a TI-92 graphing calculator for a little over $20.
The TI-92 has a 68000 processor running at 10 Mhz and 256 KB...
This was initially my wife's phone for a couple of years.
When her mother's iPhone 4s was having issues we upgraded her to an iPhone 8 Plus. She loved the speed of it compared to the iPhone 4s but it was too big for her to comfortably handle. My wife swapped phones with her and they were...
I found a MacBook on Craig's list for $20. Picked it up this morning and it looks like a laptop that cost $20.
It's a late 2006 Model with the original 1gb memory and 80GB hard drive with 10.6.8 installed. I'll need to get a power supply for it since it didn't come with one.
The...
After my mother-in-law dealt with a flaky iPhone 4 for way too long we finally upgraded her to an iPhone 8 Plus and I got to keep her old phone. No cracks or scratches and is running iOS 9.3.5
Way too tiny for my big fingers. :)
I attempted to use it for iTunes but apparently things have...
A few days ago I was doing a random search on Craigslist for computers that cost $30 or less. One of the results was an Acer Chromebook that had a damaged Chrome OS install for $25.
I picked it up today and once I was home downloaded the restore image on another computer, wrote the image to a...
Today was the last day the Raleigh Flea Market Mall was open for business. I've been helping one of the the vendors there for many years and picked up a few things from him to prevent him from having to take him home.
Among the goodies:
IBM x3500 Server with a single Xeon processor, 1GB of...
About two weeks ago I switched from Roadrunner to U-Verse. The modem for Roadrunner was in my office, while the modem for U-Verse was in my living room and on the opposite side of the house.
After buying (and returning) and router/range extender/access point I looked at what hardware I had in...
I've been using my iBook G4 1.33ghz off and on lately and noticed something odd when booting 10.4.11. While it has been connected to my home wifi before it always starts with it not being connected. I always have to select the network I can use it.
With 10.5 it automatically connects.
Any...
Yesterday at the flea market I found a Quicksilver G4/867 with memory and a hard drive. I don't know the amount of memory or the size of the hard drive, only that they are installed.
They want $35 for it.
Currently I have a Sawtooth G4/450 dual processor with 1.75GB memory and I'm debating on...
I was setting up my Dual Sawtooth G4/450 again and currently have MacOS 9.2.2/10.4.11 on it. Out of curiosity, I was trying to get Leopard to run on it with LeopardAssist. I managed to actually get the Leopard DVD to boot, but it KP'ed with a message that it was an unsupported system. I'll be...
Picked up an older HP Vectra. Not for the machine itself, which didn't work, but for its memory. It had 3 512MB PC133 DIMMs in it. They are now in my dual G4/450 for a total of 1.75GB. Not bad for $10!
I found a 5300ce at the flea market without a power supply. What is the voltage and amperage required for it? I have a couple of power supplies for the Lombard and Wallstreet II models, but they don't fit.
I found an academic version of Illustrator CS for the Mac at a nearby thrift store for $3. It goes along nicely with the copy of Toast 5 and Photoshop 7 I found from there a few months ago. :) I just hope it runs well on a dual G4/450.
I had a Compaq D530 sitting around and gave it to a coworker. She brought her old one in so I took what I wanted out of it and will recycle the rest.
512MB RAM (PC 133)
40GB hard disk
CD-ROM drive
It has a video card and an old USB card in it but I don't have a need for those.
Thanks to...
I found a TEAC DVW-DV11 standalone DVD duplicator at the thrift store for $30. It says as-is, but appears to be pristine - no dust on the rear fan blade or on the inside. I plugged it in and everything seemed OK. We'll see if it works once I get home.
Found one at a local thrift store with the power supply and assembly manual for $10. Took me a while to figure out how to open it.
EDIT: Would be nice to get a Mac Mini to go along with it. Hint, Hint. :)
