New Internal HDD in Color Classic

I think I found the problem/solution. The issue is that the jumper configuration from stason.org is wrong. The jumper bank at the front of the HDD has 7 positions. stason.org has from left to right (HDD upside down, see pic below): SCSI ID0, 1 and 2, then blank, motor spin-up, reserved, LED out...

New Internal HDD in Color Classic

Funny I'm having the same problem again, this time with a Mac IIci. And I forgot whether the passthrough terminator worked :(. I'll take a look at my Color Classic and check. Any luck with your LC III @reodraca ?

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

Quantum 100MB HDD sticky actuator was fixed. I'm always amazed how robust these guys are against spinning freely, reading and writing with the cover off. I even lightly scratched the top disk and had to re-format. Fortunately, I had made a backup copy after I manually freed the actuator, and...

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

An update this morning: I had bit the bullet and bought a ROM SIMM on eBay which I received promptly yesterday. Put it in and voila, death chime is gone, boot chime is heard, and I got the ? floppy icon on the screen. This chime was the happiest sound of the week for me :). No boot from either...

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

Ha yeah thanks, I had noticed this guy too who looked a bit crooked. It tests OK though. So I repopulated with a new set of caps, verified again all the traces, and got the same sad chime result. I checked with a scope that I have a lot of activity of the ROM pins, but that was kind of expected...

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

All right so I finally had to time to get to my board this morning. I removed 4 Ta caps that I had installed earlier, the ones neat the VIA and SWIN chips. Alas, everything looks clean, and all the traces show continuity. I will repopulate, but thought I'd send you the pics of the board areas...

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

I finished reading: very interesting indeed. This is my first project outside of the Compact Macs, and I'm learning quite a bit. The Mac 128/512 writeup has in fact more info that the IIcx/ci, but the latter does delineate between the Death Chime (failed ROM check), and the Good Chime followed...

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

Thanks !! I will study carefully, and yes, I need to remove the caps that I had installed, and redo the recap more thoroughly. I would hate to have you do all this work because of a shoddy recap job on my side. Your help is invaluable !

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

Ah, thanks. So yeah, what I hear is only the chime of death, which I also hear when there is no RAM. This seems to exonerate the RAM from being the cause of my problem. That's progress. Thanks again @jmacz

Thanks. Yeah mostly lint and dust. Looks like the PCB varnish on the underside suffered from chicken pox though (see high res photo). I also notice that a couple of vias are empty of tin solder (see pic below). I wouldn't expect that it could be a problem since the sides of the through hole...

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

Oh great, thanks. Chimes of death (COD) are different for different products. If you see here, the COD for the IIcx sounds like a regular chime, followed by the death chime. I would assume it's the same for the IIci. Is this what you hear ?

The battery had not exploded, and the area is super clean (below)

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

Wow, great eyes. I was really hoping that WAS the problem, but upon closer look, the two pins were not touching. And after straightening them, the problem is still there. Below is the pic of the underside

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

Thanks. Will look into this. My understanding was that the area around C10 controlled the soft power on/off. Does it also control the boot-up sequence ? Also, does anyone know whether the chime of death always happens when no RAM is present

So I tried again swapping the RAM SIMMS, inspecting traces, contacts etc.. I reflowed all the new Ta caps, and I still get the same result. I attach new high res pics of the bad cap areas. I actually looks as clean as I have ever seen on a vintage Mac board.

Thanks. When I replaced the caps, I did that, but of course I might have missed something. I might bite the bullet, remove them and replace again

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

By the way, what's the purpose of the edge connector J24 (burnin) ? Wouldn't this allow for some kind of diagnostic, using a scope perhaps ?

    Sad/Death Chime on IIci

Yes, thanks. My understanding is that Bank A must be populated first. I thought I tried both sets of 4 in Bank A, with no success. I also tried other sets I had in my spare parts, but let me look into this more. Please keep these advices coming :)
