PowerBook 165 screen issues after a recap

A via is a tiny hole in a multi layer circuit board connecting the top side with the bottom side Or, as is the case here, some board are even multi layered (more than just the top and the bottom that you can see, but also circuits sandwiched inside the board, usually 4 or 6 layers - in this...

PowerBook 165 screen issues after a recap

This board was cleaned with IPA before I recapped it, but I didn't pay much attention to the vias, and they probably "stored" tiny amounts of capacitor juice that slowly killed them AFTER my repair. Lesson learned for next time ; inspect the board with the microscope and "clean" as much as...

PowerBook 165 screen issues after a recap

Well the goods news is : it's is mostly working, kinda. Indeed as I suspected, my problem of the entire bottom half of the screen basically missing one white column on two, was a via problem. Some vias close the the bottom of the board (next to the soft board interconnect) have been filled with...

PowerBook 165 screen issues after a recap

You give me hope . I took the screen apart again but didn’t really check the motherboard connector . I did this repair with my teenage daughter so it’s a pain to see it not working anymore It’s worth a try

PowerBook 165 screen issues after a recap

Exact same problem for me, but on a 145 (which is rouggly the same) Fully recapped as well, worked fine for a year, now half of the screen with similar patterns as yours I think that some cap juice has made its way inside a microscopic via and destroyed the copper...

PowerBook G3 PRAM Battery—i moved it

Exactly . It seems the pram is tightly linked to the main battery ; I would say it even charges thru the main battery . My solution hit the same problems .

    powerbook G4 screen syndrome

Ha that would be frustrating... The thing has waited 20 years in someone's attic or basement, and now that it is in good hands all re-installed, with a nice SSD hard disk and all, it dies in my hand.

    powerbook G4 screen syndrome

Did anyone encounter this problem before, here a powerbook G4 I'm pretty sure this wasn't there a couple of months ago (I would have noticed, I replaced the hdd on that one ) This is particularly visible at a specific angle, barely visible with screen off. I don't think this is vinegar...

    Asanté Micro EN/SC (help)

Can you elaborate on scsi probe ? Where do I find that ? It shows all signs of working especially the link ; power and rx light blink according to traffic … But any attempt to use or access it crashes the system ( freeze ) I’m running driver v5.4.2 on System 7.5.5 , on a pb145 but it's the...

    Asanté Micro EN/SC (help)

Message in a bottle ! I've got one of those, a Micro EN/SC from Asanté. This is a device supposed to give Ethernet support to HDI30 devices, mostly powerbooks (which I collect). However the device does not work. I've opened it up, and there is nothing obvious to repair (capacitors or the...

Iomega Zip drive : reads but does not write

Yeah I'm not blaming the seller, I encounter this situation more and more ; people selling their dad/grandpa's attics, and don't have a large technical expertise, do some basic tests and sell things as "working" . I believe this unit saw a lot of use and there is a problem with it. Replacement...

Iomega Zip drive : reads but does not write

I'm glad you mention this ; I do not use the special cable, I use a regular DB25 cable I don't think this could be the problem ? Especially as the device is detected ? Also, the seller said it worked and did not have the cable either Do you know what's special about that cable ?

Iomega Zip drive : reads but does not write

I just scored a Iomega ZIP100 plus (parallel + scsi) for which I had high hopes However, I'm pretty unlucky these days on ebay (or we're really seeing the end of the working retro devices on ebay...) And it does not work well, despite the seller's claims. It makes a spinning noise that I don't...

I'll try again to get into open firmware there seems to be a "multi-boot" command, EVEN ON A WALLSTREET, that i'd like to try. My pram battery has been replaced and works even for sleep mode. I also tryied COM-OPT-P-R to zap the pram. I need to deal with one problem after the other. Clearly...
