New to me PB180...it's dead Jim...

After wrestling an original Portable back to health I figured it was time to embrace the grey brick era. I remember working on these back in the day when they were easy to change things out. At the time the helpful SSOL used to work through "won't power on" as Check PSU. Done. Reset PMU. Done...

    Got a Techstep!

Fixed up the display which had vinegar syndrome. Many of the cables still unopened. Oddly the one 68k machine which doesn’t seem covered is the original Portable, or did you need to choose something like the SE for testing?

They weren’t kidding about the vinegar...

Acquired a Techstep kit virtually unused (cables still sealed) but the display was foggy dark so the seller cut me a deal. Took it apart after researching vinegar syndrome and the sniff test confirmed my expectations.    Removed the old film which looks like bad sun tint and replacement film...

    Color Classic floppy port

I think it's time to put a bigger hard drive in the CC, half my 80MB is full and I haven't got the elbow room to upgrade to 7.5.5 from 7.1 which leads to the "anybody using floppyEMU with CC" question ? G4 Cube Latch

Just acquired a G4 Cube (bigger and heavier than I imagined from the photos!) but seems there may be some alignment or mechanism issue with the latching (or lack of it). Hand operates normally it would seem but the innards won't stay latched inside the overcoat, even with the handle in the...

    Hybrid schematic

In my wading through Google search results, I came across this GitHub project to map out the schematics for the Hybrid board, and a project that will go into KiCad. It might help someone and I figured you can never have too much information... https://github.com/ppieczul/macintosh-portable

Portable - two steps forward one back

Non backlit Portable was dead to the world and in need of a recap. Someone wasn't kidding about the nasty fish smell - I thought thai fish sauce was pungent until the hot air cooked up  a whiff of funky bouillabaisse . But the recap operation seems to be *mostly* successful as I now power up...

Macintosh Portable - keyboard connector pins to short

Hi All I've watched a number of YouTube Portable Rescue videos and seen a couple of people shorting pins on the keyboard connector to start/wake it up when the board is on the bench. I could just reattach the keyboard but I'd like to join the Cool Kids Gang - I can never see which pins get...
