Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

Yeah, C12 is intentionally crooked because JLCPCB didn't do a very good job packing the boards, and a couple of them had their caps torn off in shipping. Both pads for that one are completely gone, so I had to get creative with fitting the replacement cap.

Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

Another thing that's crossed my mind is the chips -- some of them were populated at the factory when the board was made, and the rest are a mix of transplanted and NOS parts. I've attached a high-res photo of my board, maybe someone can spot something wrong? (It turns out the pin probes I...

Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

That's the path I've started to go down with troubleshooting. Over the past week I've confirmed a few more things: --I tested all the connections to/from the ROM slot, CPU, UI8 and UH7 for continuity and they all check out. If there's a problem with those, it's not due to the soldering. --The...

Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

Updates: --No chime through the audio jack --It's the same simasimac pattern regardless of whether the ROM SIMM is installed --No shorts on UI8. UH7 has a short between pins 10-11 but this is expected (and confirmed on another board) --I tried swapping the FPU, SCSI chip, UB10 and UB11 with the...

Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

Only a few of the PLCCs are NOS replacements -- the FPU, UK11/UK12, and the SCSI chip are from UTSource, while the rest are transplants from a donor board. The donor was battery bombed so I wasn't able to test it. All of those are socketed so connection issues are unlikely, but I can certainly...

Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

I made significant progress in building my own Reloaded board recently, and just today tried to power it on for the first time. I connected it to a known-good SE/30 chassis, using known-good RAM and ROM SIMMs. To my chagrin, it just displays a Simasimac pattern -- so the lights are on but...

Oh hey, it's another dead IIsi power supply thread

Funny enough, the first of the two PSUs I fixed did have a cap that was reversed. Replacing it got that one working perfectly. This second unit didn't have that problem. I think the next logical step is to throw the daughterboard into the ultrasonic cleaner, then try to clean the DC side of the...

Oh hey, it's another dead IIsi power supply thread

Does the little vertical daughterboard control the standby voltage? There was some leaked electrolyte when I recapped it, but I cleaned it as best I could. Perhaps it needs a trip through the ultrasonic? The main PCB had already been recapped when I got the PSU, and didn't look too bad, but it's...

Oh hey, it's another dead IIsi power supply thread

I was handed a pair of IIsi power supplies, Sony APS-06, to try to fix. One of them was easy to get working again, but the second is being stubborn. It's been fully recapped (including the SMD caps on the daughterboard), and it's producing the 5V standby rail. A known-good IIsi won't power on...

Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

I'm a little unclear on exactly how to implement the fix. The photo above of the factory bodge wire shows it going from (a test point apparently connected to) pin 14 of UG7 to under the socket on UI6. Where does it go? And would that bodge be applicable to the Reloaded board?

Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

Thanks! I was able to salvage the original chip from the donor board, so I'll just clean it up and transplant it.

Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

I have a question related to a couple of the PLCC chips. Would this one be a suitable replacement for UH7? And likewise, would this work for UK11 and UK12? Thanks!

JLCPCB seems too good to be true

Small, plain PCBs are cheap through them but once you get into bigger boards and SMD assembly the costs go up dramatically. Definitely still cheaper than going with a company based in the US, but well out of "that's crazy cheap" territory.

PowerBook 5300ce Plastics Replacement in 2023?

PowerBook 5300ce Plastics Replacement in 2023?

If I stumble across a 190/5300 that needs hinge standoffs, I'll definitely design a new part. My own 5300c happens to be one of the "second revision" models (where they went back and fixed a *lot* of the housing problems from the initial machines that shipped) so it hasn't yet needed it. I can...

Dead DayStar Genesis MP CPU card -- ideas?

I don't have any photos handy, but there's a good look at the card around 3:48 in my video about the machine.

Dead DayStar Genesis MP CPU card -- ideas?

I have a DayStar Genesis MP with the quad CPU card, and it doesn't want to boot. Pressing the power button gets the system to power on, but there's no chime, video, or hard drive activity. The system has a brand new PRAM battery. Swapping the CPU card for another one, like a Sonnet G3...

    A few Outbound Laptop questions

    1. The keyboard can work either over infrared, or with an attached cable. The keyboard has two ports, an RJ11 (with matching RJ11 on the Outbound itself), and a mini-DIN. What's the pinout of the RJ11 cable? (I'd like to find/make one.) And what's the mini-DIN for? 2. You could get the Laptop...

    PowerBook 540c screen problems

I picked up a PowerBook 540c not long ago, and while it seems to boot normally, there's an obvious problem with the screen (see attachment). Has anyone seen this before? My gut says it could be bad caps on the screen's driver board, but I've never encountered this problem before so I can't say...
