Macintosh 512K painted black - paint stripping options?

Of the keyboard? :) It looks like it wasn't painted, I will make some photos soon

PB 100: Another victim of vinegar syndrome?

I have 4 laptops of similar vintage, all developed vinegar syndrome. All of them have passive matrix of course, so that means they are just for parts now if there is no source of STN film. Too bad, as I modded them with CF-IDE adapters, rebuilt 2 batteries with fresh NiMH cells, recapped some...

Macintosh 512K painted black - paint stripping options?

I got a Methoxypropanol, and it works great, but it would work the best if I had enough to fully submerge the plastics in it... Sadly it cost me $25 to get just 0.2L of it. I managed to clean the keyboard almost 100%, now I need to tackle the system unit. Anyways, the four screws that hold the...

Macintosh 512K painted black - paint stripping options?

I used some citrus cleaner at first and it took the paint off quite nicely after few minutes of soaking. But it was still quite slow, and the textured parts were stubborn. I then tried using a Acrysol, which is said to be good at removing acrylics and other stuff. It was even better than the...

iMac G5 can run successfully with blown capacitor?

iMac G5 may work "fine" with multiple blown (bulging) capacitors, or might fail to POST or exhibit problems with just one defective capacitor. My iMac G5 (17-inch, 1st version) has 2 bulging capacitors on the mainboard and it works fine. I reccaped the PSU (also very important on those!) about...

    Grape iMac DV Revival

That's true. But I would really like to see how bad the original caps were ESR wise. If that was a eMac (the one with known capacitor disease) or iMac G5, then a full recap (including the PSU) would be totally in order. I had iMac G5s that didn't boot into OS (just froze) that had just one...

    Grape iMac DV Revival

My condolences. Btw, why did you attempt to do a full recap anyways? Were there any problems that looked like there were bad capacitors? I deal with 70 year old radios and TVs sometimes, and I almost always replace just one cap and then test. I only do a full recap on few sets that I had...

PowerBook 160 with vinegar syndrome LCD

No replies? Is vinegar syndrome so rare after all? I found another two laptops with vinegar syndrome, one of my favorite 486 laptops ever made - Compaq Contura Aero 425. And one much newer, a Compaq Armada E500, from 2000! That one was still fine just 6 months ago. I guess the defect isn't that...

PowerBook 160 with vinegar syndrome LCD

My PowerBook 160 sadly developed a vinegar syndrome after being stored for bit more than 2 years. Other similar aged PowerBooks in my collection are still fine, also being stored for same amount. I opened it and found out that the panel is Sharp LM64P58. I saw few videos about replacing the...

Insights from full recap and restore of Trayloader G3 iMac

Any info on original caps? Were they still in spec? I don't think they leak I know they are pushing 25 year mark, but I have some apple stuff pushing 40 year mark and still going strong with original caps (except RIFAs).

    PowerBook Duo 270c Restoration

Btw are there any reports of leaking caps in those LCDs?

    PowerBook Duo 270c Restoration

I opted actually actually for Hybrid Polymers, not the standard Polymers. They are somewhere in between of a Polymer and normal Aluminum Electrolytics. A bit of a new technology. I don't think they will leak anytime soon also :) There's a good read of comparing these three technologies...

    PowerBook Duo 270c Restoration

Hey, yeah, go ahead. You can use the photos and the cap list :) I am also planning of opening a dedicated new thread and presenting the restoration there. Btw, I ordered Aluminum Hybrid Polymer Capacitors, as they are more like standard electrolytics, but have excellent electrical properties...

    Questions about 5xx batteries

NiCD and NiMH batteries can last decades (actually surpassing Lithium Ion), but only if their seals aren't broken, so the air can't get into and oxidise them. But as we can see, most of those batteries leak after all that time as the seals get breached, and the air enters, and the electrolyte...

    PowerBook Duo 270c Restoration

Thanks! Well I got the 270c yesterday and is uses bit different array of caps: Here is the list: Logic board: 4x 35V 100uF 10x10mm footprint 1x 35V 47uF 8x8mm footprint 1x 25V 100uF 8x8mm footprint All those must be 10-11 mm tall or less 1x 25V 33uF 6x6mm footprint, 6mm tall Inverter: 1x...

Hey, anyone has a list of all PB Duo 270c capacitors? Does the LCD on it also needs a recap? Thanks, M.

    Capacitor Recommendations for SE/30

My hands on experience with Apple laptops: For the polymer caps, on the MacBooks that run 12.6V PPBUS_G3H (main power rail), they used all 16V caps. And they hold very well, no instances of being shorted or anyhow degraded over years. And those machines also run very hot, something that isn't a...

    Capacitor Recommendations for SE/30

There is an issue. Tantalum caps have much greater voltage derating. In simple words, tantalum capacitor that "sees" 12V needs to be more than 16V rated, that one should be 25V. Other types of cap technology don't have this problem. Apple used same rated capacitors (16V 47uF) on multiple voltage...

Macintosh 512K painted black - paint stripping options?

I tried DOT3 brake fluid on one 512K before (it was really bad shape, and painted with some quite thick paint), and it didn't go that well. The plastic became weakened around the top vents which then cracked. I managed to glue it back together, but it is really bad. Also the plastic got streaks...
