TashTwenty: Single-Chip DCD (Hard Disk 20) Interface

The first wave of kits has been mailed! Looking forward to everyone's builds. Kits are still available - click here for pricing and information.

Working on assembling the kits. Still need to cut a bunch of IC tubing and program a bunch of PICs to put in it, but here's a progress shot:

Building a new LocalTalk (and LToUDP) to Ethernet gateway

This is definitely worth doing, possibly for a future rev of this, or AirTalk, or any number of different projects involving TashTalk, where the LT or PhoneNet transceiver and connectors are right on the board. The transformer specs are on page 19 of this PDF, where they make it sound like...

Building a new LocalTalk (and LToUDP) to Ethernet gateway

TashTalk has only 256... not kilobytes, bytes. =)

TashTwenty: Single-Chip DCD (Hard Disk 20) Interface

I'm assuming/hoping you mean that the level shifter board has 4.86V at Vcc and not the card itself, since SD cards are 3.3V devices... Yeah, what @cheesestraws said - I don't trust anything else but Microchip's own programmers (and clones). PICkit3s go for around $20 on ebay these days, since...

TashTwenty: Single-Chip DCD (Hard Disk 20) Interface

This is just a guess on my part, but it might be that the old-style .mcp project file gives the absolute path to p16f1825.inc which is correct for MPLAB 8 but might not be for MPLAB X. I'd try removing it from the project and then re-adding it manually the way that MPLAB X expects you to...

TashTwenty: Single-Chip DCD (Hard Disk 20) Interface

Right here. I still need to upload a hex file for the 1704, that release was from before I did the 1704 firmware which is why it isn't called out as being for the 1825. I actually use MPLAB 8.92, the last version before MPLAB X, because I strongly dislike MPLAB X and am a total stick in the...

I did a little more research, USPS First Class International costs $16.35 to most of western Europe and includes delivery confirmation to some countries.

It would! You won't hurt my feelings, don't worry. =)

Colorado, USA. International shipping from the US can be a little spendy. I think I can do First Class International to Europe for about $15-20 but I'm not sure what tracking is like. Priority Mail (which I know is tracked) is a little over $40.

TashTwenty: Single-Chip DCD (Hard Disk 20) Interface

Ah, excellent question. It does not come with a ribbon cable. It can be used internally on certain machines where the secondary drive connector is internal, which I think is just the LC and the IIx. If you are willing to be creative with wiring, you can use it internally on other machines...

Oh, and, just so you know which is which... TashTwenty Tiny (by @demik): TashTwenty Rev 1 (by me): TashTwenty Rev 1 will be red rather than purple with this new PCB order. Pictures are of the assembled final product, naturally - kits require assembly.

TashTwenty: Single-Chip DCD (Hard Disk 20) Interface

Okay, I've got the stuff priced out on Digikey, I was about right with my guess before, so, presenting... the price list! Price Item $15 Kit for building TashTwenty Tiny by @demik (takes full-size SD cards, has LEDs, fits in a Hammond case, was designed by someone who knows what he's doing)...

TashTwenty: Single-Chip DCD (Hard Disk 20) Interface

Well, I'm getting set up for slightly larger-scale kit-making, I have the PICs, I have the "DB"-19 connectors, I just ordered the PCBs. JLCPCB was so cheap that I had a bunch made of both demik's board and mine. I don't have final pricing worked out yet but PIC, PCB(s), and "DB"-19 connector...

TashTwenty: Single-Chip DCD (Hard Disk 20) Interface

I'm betting the one partition is because of that bit of behavior I found recently where if you put more than two chained DCDs on a newer machine (I'm guessing this is true of every machine except the 512 and the Plus) it only recognizes the first. I've attached a demo SD image that has only two...

    Deciphering DCD (Hard Disk 20)

Either dragging to the trash or going to File...Eject. I'd have to set the test up again to make sure (it's been a while), but it does seem to check controller status after the eject, find that the disk-in-place flag is still set, and re-mount the drive. There is activity over the bus from the...

    Deciphering DCD (Hard Disk 20)

The controller status block has a "disk-in-place" flag, which is consistent with terminology Apple uses elsewhere (I forget where) to mean that media is loaded in a removable-media drive. It may be that the Mac polls the controller status when this bit is cleared, I haven't tested this...

    Deciphering DCD (Hard Disk 20)

Ah, yes, that... The discovery of the way the Nisha diagnostic commands fit into the command set does kind of reduce my hopes that there's an "eject media" command anywhere... but they weren't high to begin with given that while the Mac does seem to recognize that a DCD with the "ejectable"...

    Deciphering DCD (Hard Disk 20)

The more I delve into the HD20 and the DCD protocol in general, the more fascinating things seem to become... I'm going to start this thread just so I can put some of the things I've found out somewhere. The May 1985 DCD Document is the best overall source for information on the DCD protocol...
