Pioneer D-706S CD-ROM drive

Hi,

Is a Pioneer D-706s CD-ROM drive usable on either a Centris 650 (C650) or a PowerMac 7300/200? I am trying to find a drive for my Centris 650 (factory standard, no higher clock CPU or Nubus SCSI cards), and the 7300/200 is also stock, and this has come up. The D-706S is a 32X CD-ROM, so it can read the CDs faster than the SCSI bus can move the data on the C650, but taking the existing CD-ROM drive out of the 7300/200, moving it to the C650, and using the D-706S to the 7300/200 is a possibility. Question becomes the need for drivers (this is not an Apple drive, so they probably would be required) for either the C650 or 7300/200, and the fit regarding front bezel. The D-706S is a slot load drive.

Does anybody know if there are drivers for the D-706S for Mac OS 7.6.1, 8.1 or 9.2? Do the various hacked versions of the Apple CD-ROM drivers work for the D-706S?

Taddy, thanks for sending me the link to that. It didn't show up when I did a seach. I hope the driver works on the early Mac OS/System versions. Appreciate it.

Hello, I got a PowerMac 6100/66 with a similar Pioneer DR-706S (should be 36x speed), but without hard drive, so I´ll need that extension too, thank you for sharing, @taddy.
@kkritsilas Could get your drive working with this driver? Do you have further documents / description of that Pioneer drive (technical data sheet)?

My drive appears to be non-functional in that it doesn't read CDs. The CDs are visible in other machines. It does power up, seems to spin up (from the sound) but doesn't read anything.

My drive is spinning up too and SCSI probe recognizes the drive correctly, but without the extension and MacOS 7.5.5 it could be a problem. I´ll try it with my PM6500 or maybe G3 B&W with adaptec SCSI card and MacOS 9.
