    PowerMac G4!

If you remove the outer plastic side panels, you might find a disgusting amount of hair and dust wedged between the panel and inner metal case, blocking airflow in from the bottom. As others have said, the MDDs are noisy. Mine was marginally less sporadic with the fan RPMs once I thoroughly...

Always feels like Christmas when you find an unexpected accelerator card

That's very cool! I know that feeling and it does feel like Christmas morning. I booted up a "non-working" 1600c to find that not only does it work but it was also a G3. I haven't heard of that particular maker before. There was great 3rd party innovation then...and accessible computers (y)

    Original 12" PB HDD Fail

Thanks, @Byrd. That's a good idea. Let it spin up without having to load the OS. I have not yet disassembled a 12" but I've read about what a pain it is. I do have an M.2 drive mounted in a 2.5" adapter ready to go and Noctua thermal paste that is about two years old now. Too old to use?

    Original 12" PB HDD Fail

My pandemic-find minty 12" PowerBook has been full of surprises. Functional batteries, one at 88% capacity the other at 94%, no shiny keys, and a healthy original hard drive. Well the later changed tonight before my eyes and I blame the GDR! (More on that later). Because it has functional...

    PowerBook Ethernet PCMICA setup

Hooray! Good work. That's a nice prize after all that work.

    PowerBook Ethernet PCMICA setup

As a kid we used a Performa 550 online well into 1997 and it was excruciatingly slow compared to a Toshiba with IE that I used at school. OS9 felt like it helped speed things up along with the G3 chip. Its remarkable how quickly the software/hardware landscape changed from say 1992 to 1999. I...

    PowerBook Ethernet PCMICA setup

@3lectr1cPPC It was featured on this morning's start page. Yesterday I couldn't find it in the Forums and refreshing it didn't bring it back up. Here's the link: S7T Weather By the way, I'm glad you were able to get your 1400 online. I had to go through a few motions as well to get mine to...

    PowerBook Ethernet PCMICA setup

Has anyone been able to find more information about the getting the weather on System 7? I've searched the forum there but can't find more about it. That would be very cool.

    540c now in collection

Congratulations. That's a lovely machine. These were brand new when I had "computer class" as a 4th grader. I was accustomed to the block-like 100 series and this looked like the future to me. There was a bank of them in the lab and seeing the flashing sleep lights was incredibly cool. The...

    Unexpected Utility

OS 9 resided(s) on an interesting array of Macs. I imagine 9.2 looks elegant on the 12" screen with aluminum body.

    Unexpected Utility

I didn't know about that browser. That's wonderful! And for my next project... Thank you. Its wonderful to have that machine up and running. I got through weird periods where I feel like daily use is going to ruin them and put them in a drawer and other times when it feels like, "Use them or...

I really need to do some cleaning…

My Duo looks just like yours! I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better. Life became busy just as I was trying to round the corner on my 2300c project. Now I have to remember where I left off.

    Unexpected Utility

Yes, those keyboards! I used my 2003 17" daily from 2003-2014 and the keyboard still looks new; no shiny worn off bits. They are my favorite non-mechanical keyboard.

    Unexpected Utility

Last night I needed to burn a CD-R in an attempt to resurrect my 5,1 MacPro from bootROM woes. In the process of saving the 5,1, I rediscovered my little 12" PowerBook 1.33 and spent hours realizing that despite its age and 10.4.11, it packs quite a bit of utility for me in an unmodified state...

    AGP G4 No Thermal Paste?

@Unknown_K How did you clean it off? I've tried to gently peel up an edge but its not forthcoming and I'm worried that I'll make a mess of it. This one isn't peeling off like wax. @Byrd I agree. A little thermal paste to keep things cool.
